The city began in 1743 as a fortress guarding the steppe and the trade routes into Central Asia, and that frontier feel lingers. A pedestrian bridge crosses the Ural with Europe on one bank and Asia on the other. This is continental steppe country: bitter winters, hot dry summers. Its craft claim to fame is the Orenburg down shawl, spun so fine it can be pulled through a wedding ring.
