Novi Sad
Aprox. 215,400 habitantesApprox. 215,400 people
Novi Sad is the capital of Vojvodina province and Serbia’s second city, on the banks of the Danube. Above the river rises Petrovaradin Fortress, an imposing Austro-Hungarian citadel that hosts the EXIT festival each summer. The city has an elegant, Central-European-feeling center with Liberty Square and the Name of Mary Church, and it was a European Capital of Culture in 2022. Calmer and flatter than Belgrade, it’s a very comfortable stop for strolling, with the Danube’s river beach at hand in summer.

Clima continental: veranos calurosos e inviernos fríos. Continental climate: hot summers, cold winters. ¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Novi Sad?How much do you need per month in Novi Sad?
Novi Sad works if you want a small, walkable, safe European city with excellent internet, real coffee culture and prices well below Western Europe — with Belgrade 1.5 hours away and Budapest a short hop north. It works less well if you need a big nomad scene: this is a city of ~300,000 where the foreign community is mostly Russians and Ukrainians who arrived after 2022, the Spanish-speaking crowd is tiny, and coworking options are counted on one hand. And it's no longer the bargain it was: that same wave pushed rents up hard and they haven't come back down. One caveat on the numbers: almost everything is quoted in euros and paid in dinars, so dollar figures move with the exchange rate.

One of the city's strongest points. Home fiber is widespread (SBB/EON, Telekom Srbija/mts, Orion) with plans typically in the 100–500 Mbps range for ≈US$20–30/month, and it's stable — Serbia has no scheduled blackouts and long outages are rare. Furnished flats very often come with internet already installed and included in the utilities, which saves you a contract in Serbian. Mobile 4G is good and cheap across the city and the Vojvodina region; Serbia's 5G rollout has been repeatedly delayed and coverage is still limited, so don't count on it — confirm with the operator when you buy your SIM. Prepaid data is cheap enough that using your phone as a backup hotspot for video calls is a genuine plan B. If you work US hours or live on calls, still ask for a speed test inside the flat before signing: the fiber reaches the building, but the landlord's router may be eight years old.
CoworkingCoworking
Small but real scene, fed by the local tech industry (Novi Sad is Serbia's second IT hub, driven by the Faculty of Technical Sciences and the Science and Technology Park) and by the wave of remote workers who arrived after 2022. I'd rather not hand you space names: in a city this size they open and close, and I don't want to send you to a dead address — find them on the ground or ask in the expat groups, that's where the current list lives. Budget ≈US$90–160/month for a hot desk, less for a couple of days a week. It's not Belgrade: options are few, they fill up, and several work more like one company's shared office than an open coworking. Take a tour and try a day pass before paying for a month. The alternative most people actually use is cafés: coffee culture here is enormous and nobody rushes you, but plugs and wifi vary a lot, and in plenty of places people still smoke indoors (rules have been tightening — check). If noise and smoke wreck your focus, scout the place at the hour you'd actually be working, not 10am on a Tuesday.
Stari Grad (old town) — everything on foot: Zmaj Jovina, Dunavska, the cafés, the Danube quay. The most expensive and the noisiest at night, but for a 1–3 month stay it's the one that lets you skip transport entirely. Liman (1 through 4) — the classic foreigner/student pick. Blocks between the university and the Danube park (Štrand beach in summer), quiet, decent prices, 15–20 minutes on foot to the center. Liman 3 and 4 are the calmest. Grbavica — lots of new construction, quiet residential streets, still walkable downtown; this is where much of the Russian/Ukrainian wave landed. Expect a modern flat, but confirm the building has an elevator and check what kind of heating it uses. Podbara / Salajka — right next to the center, older and more low-rise, with the Chinese Quarter creative district (Kineska četvrt) nearby. Cheaper than Stari Grad, walkable, a bit rougher looking. Further out (Novo Naselje, Detelinara) prices drop noticeably but you depend on the bus; a monthly pass runs somewhere around ≈US$25–35 — verify it, fares change often. And note: Petrovaradin, across the Danube, is beautiful and cheaper, but you're on the far side of the bridge and that adds up day to day.
ComunidadCommunity
Easier than you'd expect for a city of ~300,000. Young Serbs speak good English and the local tech scene is real, so professionally and socially you get by in English from day one. Since 2022 there's a large Russian and Ukrainian community, much of it remote tech, and it sustains a good chunk of the cafés, coworking and English/Russian-speaking meetups. The Spanish-speaking community is tiny — you'll find people, but don't expect a ready-made Latino circle. Meetups skew tech, plus language exchanges, board-game nights and the eternal Serbian café ritual: here you sit for two hours over one cup, and that's where friendships actually happen. Serbian is what you'll need for landlords, banks and the police; note that signs and documents show up in both Cyrillic and Latin script, so learning to read Cyrillic in your first weeks saves you real friction.
Three things nobody tells you. One: the white card (beli karton). As a foreigner you must register your address with the police within hours of arriving (the window is short — about a day). Hotels and Airbnbs do it automatically; a private landlord renting in cash often does not want to — and without registration you'll hit walls at the bank, in any residence application, and potentially at the border. Ask BEFORE paying a deposit and make it a condition of the deal. Two: the 90 days. Most Western and Latin American passports get up to 90 visa-free days within a 180-day period. The old habit of hopping to Hungary or Bosnia and coming back to reset the clock is not a legal reset, and officers have gotten stricter. Serbia has floated tax incentives for remote workers and talked about a digital-nomad visa, but the rules have moved — verify with the Serbian consulate, not with a blog post. Three: winter. Genuinely continental climate: summers hit 35 °C+, winters go below zero, and Serbian cities have genuinely bad winter air quality from heating and traffic. That cost inflates your bill from November to March; ask whether the flat is on district heating (fixed fee) or electric heaters (that one hurts). On top of that: rents jumped hard after 2022 and haven't come back down, prices are quoted in euros but paid in dinars, cash still rules with small landlords and many rentals are informal (no contract, no deposit you'll ever see again), and the first week of July the Exit festival fills the city and inflates every short-stay price.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
