Belgrade sits right where the Sava river meets the Danube, and that confluence explains almost everything: for centuries it was a border and a battlefield, and today it's a rough, cheap capital with a nightlife energy that catches everyone off guard. It's not a polished postcard city like Prague or Vienna; it's socialist concrete, faded Austro-Hungarian facades, and a scene of bars and floating clubs that never quits. You walk it, drink rakija, and eat a lot of grilled meat. More and more nomads use it as a base because it's so cheap.
Mejor épocaBest time
May-June and September are ideal: mild, with packed terraces. July-August brings continental heat (35°C) but that's when the floating-club season on the river kicks off. Winter is cold and grey.

Moneda: dinar serbio (no usan euro). Efectivo sigue siendo rey en muchos sitios. One of the cheapest capitals in Europe. A nomad lives on $900-1,400/month; beer and ćevapi cost a couple of euros. Currency: Serbian dinar (not the euro). Cash still rules in many places.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Belgrade? How much do you need per month in Belgrade?
Belgrade works if you want a still-cheap European base with solid fiber, cafés on every corner, and 90 visa-free days OUTSIDE Schengen (time here doesn't burn your Schengen days). It works badly if you're sensitive to air pollution: from November to February the winter smog is among the worst in Europe. And heads up, it's no longer the 2021 bargain — the big Russian and Ukrainian influx since 2022 pushed rents way up, though eating, going out, and getting around are still cheap.

Home fiber (SBB/EON and mts from Telekom Srbija are the two big ones) gets you a real 100–500 Mbps for ≈US$25–35 a month, installation is fast, and dropouts aren't a daily problem. On mobile, 4G coverage from Yettel, A1 and mts is good across the city; 5G arrived late and is still limited — Serbia dragged its spectrum auction out for years — so don't build your work life around it. A prepaid SIM with decent data runs ≈US$10–15 a month. Blackouts aren't routine, but summer heat waves have brought neighborhood outages of a couple of hours; if you live on video calls, keep mobile data as a plan B.
CoworkingCoworking
A mid-sized but genuine scene, driven by the local tech ecosystem (Serbia has a huge freelance dev base) and by the Russian and Ukrainian wave since 2022. A hot desk runs ≈US$100–160 a month; a dedicated desk or private office, considerably more. Established names in the city include Nova Iskra (design/creative leaning), Impact Hub Belgrade and Startit Centar — check directly with them that they're still operating, plus prices and hours, because spaces here open and close. The alternative half of Belgrade uses is café culture: you can hold a table for hours on one espresso, though it gets loud at peak times and the wifi in some places is more decorative than usable.
Vračar is the favorite: central, walkable, old buildings with character, cafés everywhere — and the priciest of the "normal" neighborhoods. Dorćol and the rest of Stari Grad make up the old town by the Danube, with the highest concentration of bars and foreigners. Novi Beograd is the blocks across the Sava: ugly from the outside, but big apartments, cheaper and well connected — where people go when they want square meters. Zemun, on the Danube, feels like its own little town, quieter and cheaper, but far if your social life is downtown. Beograd na vodi (Belgrade Waterfront) is the new expensive stuff: glass towers, zero neighborhood soul.
ComunidadCommunity
Meeting people is easy. Since 2022 tens of thousands of Russians and Ukrainians arrived, and that created a whole layer of cafés, coworkings and Russian- and English-speaking groups. The Spanish-speaking community is small but real. Young people and the entire tech sector speak good English, so Serbian isn't mandatory — though a few words open doors (and note: it's written in both Cyrillic and Latin script depending on the place, so signs are confusing at first). Meetups mostly get organized on Facebook, Telegram and Meetup, and there are regular tech events. Social life revolves around daytime café sitting and long nights: go out and you'll meet people fast; stay in and the city won't come looking for you.
The big one: winter air. Between November and February Belgrade regularly shows up near the top of global particulate-pollution rankings — coal heating plus nearby thermal power plants. If you're asthmatic or coming with kids, think twice, or come in spring/autumn. Beyond that: rents have jumped hard since 2022, they're quoted in euros even though the currency is the dinar, and leases are often informal and cash-based — insist on something in writing. As a foreigner you must register your address with the police (the "beli karton") on arrival; normally the landlord or hotel does it, and if your landlord refuses to register you, find another landlord — without that registration any paperwork gets messy. Since late 2024 the country has been in a long cycle of student protests and road blockades: huge and generally peaceful, more of a traffic headache than a personal risk, but check before you head out. Summer hits 35 °C+ and plenty of older buildings have no A/C. Most nationalities get 90 visa-free days and Serbia is NOT in Schengen, but staying longer means applying for residence (boravak), which isn't automatic — there's no digital nomad visa as such. And smoking: Serbia was one of the last places in Europe where you could smoke inside bars; the rules have been tightening, but in practice it varies venue by venue — if smoke bothers you, ask before you sit down.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
