An earthquake leveled the city in 1908, so much of what you see is 20th-century rebuilding, with wide avenues and low, quake-resistant buildings. Even so it keeps gems like the Duomo and its famous astronomical clock. Many people just pass through, but it's worth a few hours for its cathedral, Renaissance fountains and the port life facing Calabria.
