Turín
Aprox. 870,456 habitantesApprox. 870,456 people
Turin is the capital of Piedmont, in northwest Italy, at the foot of the Alps beside the Po River. It was the first capital of unified Italy and the historic seat of the House of Savoy, which shows in its straight avenues, baroque squares and miles of arcades. It's the city of Fiat and the car, of Juventus and Torino, of chocolate and vermouth, and of the world's most important Egyptian Museum after Cairo. Elegant, a touch serious, and less touristy than Rome or Florence.
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) for mild weather. Winter is cold, sometimes foggy, but puts the Alps within reach for snow; summer is hot and humid.

Northern Italy is mid-to-high priced, but Turin is cheaper than Milan for lodging and food. The aperitivo (a drink with free food) is the best value going.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Turín?How much do you need per month in Turín?
Turin is one of the cheapest big cities in northern Italy (Genoa competes): you pay mid-size-city rents but get solid fibre, one metro line, trains to Milan in an hour and the Alps an hour and a half away. It works if you want a serious European base, real food and a contained budget, and if you don't mind (or actively like) living your day-to-day in Italian. It doesn't work if you're after a big English-speaking nomad scene, or if grey winters and the Po Valley's heavy air would genuinely wear you down — that's not a footnote here.

Good, no drama. Turin is among Italy's better-wired cities: several providers offer fibre to the home (FTTH) with hundreds of megs to a gig for ≈€25-30 a month, and in practice it handles video calls all day. The catch: plenty of older buildings in the historic centre are only served to the street cabinet (FTTC), which leaves you at a real 50-200 Mbps depending on distance — ask about the exact address before signing a lease, not whether "the area has fibre". Installation takes two to four weeks and they'll want a codice fiscale, so if you're arriving short-term, look for a flat with fibre already active. Mobile is among the best and cheapest in Europe: solid 4G/5G across the city for about €9-10 a month with data to spare, a decent hotspot plan B. No blackouts, chronic outages or censorship.
CoworkingCoworking
A small but real scene, with more depth than you'd expect: the Politecnico and the post-Fiat reinvention left behind a startup and tech ecosystem. The historic reference point is Toolbox Coworking, one of Italy's oldest coworking spaces, in the southern part of the centre between Crocetta and San Salvario, with a design, architecture and software crowd. The other pole is OGR (Officine Grandi Riparazioni), a huge converted railway workshop turned innovation and culture hub that hosts accelerators, events and tech programmes. Beyond those two there are several smaller, cheaper neighbourhood spaces, though they come and go — better to scout them on arrival than trust a list. Prices: flex desk ≈€120-190 a month, dedicated desk a bit more, day pass in the €15-20 range. Heads-up: the grand historic cafés downtown are gorgeous but not places to camp with a laptop for three hours — a specialty coffee spot in San Salvario or Vanchiglia works far better.
San Salvario is the default: right next to Porta Nuova station, the most mixed and the most nightlife, Valentino park on its doorstep and the biggest stock of furnished short-let flats. Vanchiglia is its quieter, more bohemian cousin, beside the university's Einaudi campus, full of neighbourhood bars and somewhat cheaper. Cit Turin, around Porta Susa, is the Liberty (art nouveau) district: handsome, residential, with the best train and metro links in the city — a good price-quality balance. Crocetta is the elegant, silent area by the Politecnico: the priciest on this list and the dullest at night, but if you're here to actually work and sleep well, that's the one. If you want price and local life without tourists, look at Santa Rita or Borgo San Paolo. Practical note: the metro is a single line (Porta Nuova–Porta Susa–Collegno–Lingotto), so off that axis you live on trams and buses.
ComunidadCommunity
Be honest with yourself: Turin is not a nomad hub. Don't expect Lisbon or Barcelona; nomad groups exist but they're small and events are sporadic. What it does have is a huge student population between the Università di Torino and the Politecnico, plenty of Erasmus included, and that's where you naturally meet young international people. Around OGR and the startup ecosystem there are reasonably regular tech and design meetups. If you're a Spanish speaker you're in luck: Turin has a Latin American community that's been settled for decades — Peruvian above all — plus Romanian (the largest), Moroccan and Chinese communities, so hearing Spanish on the street is normal. That said, daily life runs in Italian, and outside university and tourist circles English drops off fast: coming from Spanish you'll pick it up quickly, but arriving with zero Italian will isolate you. The local social mechanism is the aperitivo — at seven in the evening everyone is in a bar, and it's the easiest way to meet people.
The air. Turin sits in the Po Valley, a windless basin where pollution stagnates, and every other winter the city shows up among the worst in Italy and Europe for fine particulates. There are traffic-restriction days due to smog. If you have asthma or small kids, this matters more than the rent. Related: winter is grey, damp and genuinely cold, and gas heating will hurt on the January bill; summer runs around 35°C with humidity and no breeze. In August the city empties and half the shops close. For rentals, the format that works for you is the contratto transitorio (18 months max); count on two or three months' deposit, many landlords want a guarantor or an Italian payslip, and for almost everything — lease, fibre, bank — you need a codice fiscale, which is free and worth sorting on day one. Immigration: on a non-EU passport you're on Schengen 90/180, and Italy's digital nomad visa (live since 2024) requires provable minimum income and health insurance — a threshold in the region of €28,000 a year has been reported, but it shifts and varies by consulate, so confirm it at the official source before building plans on it; if you enter on it, the permesso di soggiorno is applied for right after arrival. Safety: the city is calm by Latin American standards, but watch your wallet at Porta Nuova and the Porta Palazzo market, and the Aurora and Barriera di Milano areas feel rougher at night. One last thing: these figures are converted to dollars at roughly €1 = US$1.15, a rate that moves a fair bit — check the actual rate the month you budget and adjust.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
