Linz

Aprox. 204,846 habitantesApprox. 204,846 people

Linz is Austria's third city and capital of Upper Austria, on the Danube between Salzburg and Vienna. For decades it was a gray industrial town (home to the voestalpine steelworks), but it reinvented itself as a digital-art reference: it's a UNESCO City of Media Arts and host of the Ars Electronica festival. Its Hauptplatz is one of Europe's largest baroque squares, and the Danube, the riverside museums, and the Pöstlingberg hill give it a very walkable scale. It's the city of Anton Bruckner and the famous Linzer Torte.

Mejor épocaBest time

May to September for mild weather and Danube walks. The Ars Electronica festival falls in September. Winter is cold and gray, though with Christmas markets; spring and autumn are pleasant.

PresupuestoBudget

Austrian prices, Western European level, but Linz is somewhat cheaper than Vienna or Salzburg. A good balance for a calm Danube base.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Linz? How much do you need per month in Linz?

Si vienes a producir en calma y usar el tren a Viena (≈1h20) como válvula de escape, encaja; si necesitas gente nueva cada semana, calor y presupuesto bajo, no.Linz works if you want a calm base that simply functions: excellent internet, flawless public transport, high safety, nature 20 minutes away, and a genuine creative scene around the Tabakfabrik and Ars Electronica. What it isn't: cheap, or socially easy from day one — it's an industrial university city of roughly 200,000 where daily life happens in German and where a nomad community barely exists. If you're here to work quietly and use the train to Vienna (≈1h20) as your escape valve, it fits; if you need new people every week, warmth, and a low budget, it doesn't.

Internet y señalInternet & signal

Aquí no vas a tener problemas. Apagones eléctricos: básicamente no existen. You won't have problems here. Fiber and cable reach nearly the whole city — Liwest is the local Linz cable operator (part of the Linz AG group), plus A1, Magenta and Drei; 100–500 Mbps is standard, with gigabit available across much of the city, for ≈US$35–55 a month. Power cuts: essentially nonexistent. The annoying part is contractual, not technical: most home plans are 12- or 24-month commitments, so for a short stay you want a flat that already includes internet. Mobile: 5G citywide, and Austria is among the cheapest in Western Europe for data — a prepaid SIM with a huge data allowance (HoT, spusu, yesss!) runs ≈US$10–15 a month. You must register the SIM with your passport; it's been a legal requirement since 2019.

CoworkingCoworking

Small but real, and very concentrated. The center of gravity is the Tabakfabrik, the old tobacco factory turned creative district: studios, startups, and the Grand Garage makerspace all live there, and it's where you'll actually bump into people doing their own work. Beyond that there are scattered spaces downtown, but don't expect Vienna or Berlin variety, and several come and go — check a space is still open before you move for it. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$170–250; a dedicated desk, considerably more. Careful with plan B: café working isn't the local culture — Austrians don't camp out for four hours with a laptop, many places close early, and on Sundays almost everything is shut. If you're working daily, budget the coworking for real.

Innenstadt/Altstadt, around Hauptplatz and Landstraße: everything on foot, bars, and whatever nightlife exists; also the priciest and noisiest. Urfahr, across the Danube: home to the Ars Electronica Center and, further up, Kepler University (JKU), so students, gentler rents, the riverside walk, and the Pöstlingberg behind it — the best value-for-life ratio if you're arriving alone. Neue Welt and the Bulgariplatz area: central without central prices, multicultural, very practical. Froschberg and Bindermichl: residential, green, quiet — ideal if you work from home and don't mind a tram ride to go out.

ComunidadCommunity

Time to be honest: making friends in Linz is slow. There's no nomad circuit, so your social life comes from three places — the university (JKU), the creative/tech ecosystem around the Tabakfabrik and Ars Electronica, and Vereine, the sports and hobby clubs that are still the classic entry point into Austrian social life. Meetups and foreigner groups exist, but they're few and low-turnover compared to Vienna. Daily life runs in German, and in Upper Austrian dialect at that, which is rough even if you've studied the language; with younger people, at the university, and in tech, English is fine, with landlords, public offices, and neighborhood shops much less so. The Spanish-speaking community exists but is small, mostly students and workers. Austrians are polite and friendly from minute one, and actual friends at around the six-month mark.

First, and this is the thing that can kill your plan: Austria has no digital nomad visa. If you're non-EU you come in on the 90-days-in-180 Schengen allowance, full stop — the Rot-Weiß-Rot Karte is for working for an Austrian employer (or self-employment under very demanding conditions), not for your remote job. Confirm with the consulate before you book a flight, because the rules shift. Second, the bureaucracy: when you move in you have to file the Meldezettel (residence registration) within three days, and without it you can't open a bank account or much else. Third, renting: a deposit of up to three months, contracts written for years, and short-term furnished places are scarce and expensive; check carefully whether the advertised price already includes Betriebskosten, because utilities, heating and extra charges easily add US$130–200 a month. And winter: November to February is gray, cold, and dark after four; the Danube valley traps thermal inversions and air quality in those months is one of the worst parts of living here — Linz still has a steel plant (voestalpine) and a chemical park and, although the air is vastly better than in the 1980s, with certain winds you notice it. Add that everything closes on Sunday, that cash still rules at small businesses, and that the city is small: three months in, you've seen all of it.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
