Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living
¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Kandy? How much do you need per month in Kandy?
Kandy works if you want Sri Lanka at a livable temperature: it sits around 500 m up in the hills, so you skip the sticky coastal heat, you rarely need AC, and you can live on very little. But be clear-eyed — this is not a nomad hub. The country's remote-work scene is on the south coast (Weligama, Ahangama) and in Colombo; here you'll work from your room or a café, most likely alone. Pick it if you want green, calm, cheap and a real local rhythm; skip it if you need reliable coworking, a ready-made community or nightlife.

Home fiber comes mostly from SLT-Mobitel and reaches Kandy town and the nearby hillsides; advertised plans go up to ~100 Mbps, real-world speeds are more often in the 20–60 Mbps range and upload is modest. The catch that catches everyone: Sri Lankan home plans are usually sold with data quotas (an "anytime" allowance plus off-peak GB), and so-called unlimited plans get throttled past a threshold — if you do video calls all day or upload large files, buy a bigger package than you think you need. Mobile 4G from Dialog or Mobitel is genuinely good in and around the city, dirt cheap, and the best backup: keep a data-loaded SIM and tether when the line drops. Mind the terrain: Kandy is a bowl surrounded by hills and signal drops in tight valleys, so test both the wifi AND mobile data INSIDE the room before you commit. Power: the grid is far more stable than during the 2022 crisis, but it isn't bulletproof — hillside areas lose power in storms and country-wide outages have happened, so a laptop with battery plus a charged power bank for your router is not paranoia. Latency to Europe and North America is high (easily 150–250 ms or more); calls are fine, anything real-time and competitive is not.
CoworkingCoworking
Si encuentras escritorio formal, calcula ≈US$50–120 al mes. Thin, and that's the honest answer. Kandy is not a coworking city: spaces have opened and closed here over the years, so I won't hand you a name that may already be shuttered — check on the ground or in Sri Lanka expat groups before you count on one. Realistically you'll work from your place (get a room with fiber and a real desk) and top it up with cafés and hotel lobbies around the lake, which is workable but comes with the usual issues: few plugs, shared wifi that dips, and many places closing early. If you find a proper desk, budget ≈US$50–120/month. If a serious coworking scene is a dealbreaker, Colombo is roughly 3-4 hours away by road or train (traffic decides) and has several real spaces — and the south coast (Weligama, Ahangama) is where the country's remote-work infrastructure actually lives.
Nomads and expats in Kandy don't cluster in one district — you pick a hillside and commute by tuk-tuk. Aniwatte, on the hills northwest of the lake, is the upmarket residential choice: quiet, leafy, big views, a few minutes from the centre, and where most of the decent apartments actually are. Ampitiya, on the east slope, is calmer and cheaper — houses and annexes with views, but you'll depend on a tuk-tuk for everything. Hantana, south toward the tea slopes, is the coolest and greenest option and the one that feels most rural; lovely if you have your own transport. Peradeniya (west, by the university and botanical gardens) is cheap and lively with students, and Kundasale (east, toward the Mahaweli) is green, calm and cheaper still. The lakefront centre itself is mostly guesthouses and hotels: convenient, but the noise and diesel bus traffic get old fast if you're living there.
ComunidadCommunity
Small. There's no real nomad scene here — Sri Lanka's remote-work crowd is on the south coast and in Colombo. What Kandy does have is students and researchers from the University of Peradeniya, NGO and development people, English teachers, long-stay meditation practitioners and a scattering of long-term expats. That means friendships happen slowly and through overlap, not through a Tuesday coworking meetup. The big advantage: English is widely spoken and taught, so you can sort out rent, doctors and paperwork without Sinhala (the day-to-day language, with Tamil also present). Sri Lankans are genuinely warm and will invite you into things fast. Spanish-speaking community: essentially zero — if you need to speak Spanish regularly, this is not your city. Sri Lanka-wide expat groups (Facebook and the like) will get you further than anything happening locally.
Visa first: you arrive on a 30-day tourist ETA, extendable in stages up to several months at the Department of Immigration, which sits in the Colombo area — meaning a trip (or an agent) to sort it out. The rules, the price and even who processes applications have changed repeatedly in recent years, including free-ETA periods and court fights over the outsourced system, so check the official immigration site before you book a flight, and don't plan around a digital nomad visa, because there isn't a usable one. Money: the country came out of a hard economic crisis in 2022, the rupee devalued and rupee prices jumped; in dollars it's still cheap, but inflation and the exchange rate move, so treat my figures as a reference, not a contract. Electricity tariffs also rose sharply after the crisis: without AC the bill stays small, but don't assume power is free. Season: the Esala Perahera festival in July/August fills the city — accommodation prices spike and streets close; book far ahead or plan around it. Rain and damp: it rains a lot in the hills and October to December is the wettest stretch; mould is real, so smell the room and check the walls and the closet before you commit. Renting: deals are done by word of mouth and cash, often with several months up front, and there's no serious rental portal — see the place in person, negotiate, and never wire months of rent to someone you met online. Tuk-tuks: use PickMe or agree the price before you get in, otherwise you'll pay 2–3x. Dengue outbreaks happen — repellent, and no standing water on your balcony. Poya (full moon) days are dry days: no alcohol sold and many businesses close. And the centre is loud: Kandy sits in a bowl with diesel buses, horns and gridlock at rush hour, so if you sleep lightly, live off the lake ring.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
