Jaffna town tiene fibra real: SLT-Mobitel y Dialog llegan a buena parte del casco urbano y los planes domésticos aguantan videollamadas sin drama (decenas de megas, no gigabit, y muchos planes vienen con tope de datos — pregúntalo antes de firmar). Fuera del centro y en los pueblos de la península bajas a 4G, que funciona decente pero se congestiona. La cobertura móvil es amplia y barata. El punto flojo es la luz: la red quedó tocada tras la crisis de 2022 y, aunque los apagones programados de aquel año quedaron atrás, siguen apareciendo cortes puntuales, bajones de voltaje y algún fallo nacional aislado — si trabajas en llamadas, laptop siempre cargada y un plan de datos móviles como respaldo real, no teórico.Jaffna town has real fiber: SLT-Mobitel and Dialog cover much of the urban core and home plans handle video calls without drama (tens of megabits, not gigabit, and many plans come with data caps — ask before you sign). Lo que sí existe es una comunidad tecnológica local ligada a la Universidad de Jaffna — Yarl IT Hub lleva años organizando eventos, hackathones y programas en la ciudad — pero es una organización y su actividad, no una oficina donde llegas a pagar por escritorio (si te interesa, escríbeles antes de contar con un lugar donde sentarte). En la práctica trabajas desde tu cuarto, de cafés y lobbies de hotel del centro, y ahí el problema es el ruido y que casi ningún local está pensado para que pases seis horas. Si necesitas escritorio y silencio, negóciate un cuarto con buena mesa y aire.Straight up: there's no coworking scene here. What does exist is a local tech community tied to the University of Jaffna — Yarl IT Hub has run events, hackathons, and programs in the city for years — but it's an organization and its activities, not an office where you show up and pay for a desk (if it interests you, message them before counting on a place to sit). In practice you work from your room, from cafés and hotel lobbies downtown, and there the issues are noise and the fact that almost no venue expects you to camp for six hours. If you need a desk and quiet, negotiate a room with a good table and AC.

Los pocos extranjeros que hay — diáspora tamil que vuelve, gente de ONG, algún investigador — se concentran en el centro y alrededores. Chundikuli es la zona clásica: calles arboladas, casas coloniales, colegios, tranquila y a pie del centro. Nallur, alrededor del templo Nallur Kandaswamy, es lo más céntrico y con más vida, con hoteles y restaurantes cerca. Thirunelvely y Kokkuvil están del lado de la universidad, más residenciales y con más opción de renta larga. Gurunagar es el barrio pesquero católico junto al mar, muy local, barato y con mucho carácter, pero no es una zona pensada para vivir cómodo con laptop.The few foreigners here — returning Tamil diaspora, NGO staff, the odd researcher — cluster in and around the center. Chundikuli is the classic pick: tree-lined streets, colonial houses, schools, quiet and walkable to the center. Nallur, around the Nallur Kandaswamy temple, is the most central and lively, with hotels and restaurants nearby. Thirunelvely and Kokkuvil sit on the university side, more residential and better for long-term rentals. Gurunagar is the Catholic fishing quarter by the water — very local, cheap, full of character, but not a place built for comfortable laptop living.

La vida diaria es en tamil. El sinhala se usa poco y el inglés aparece en hoteles, universidad y con gente joven o de la diáspora, pero mucho menos en la calle que en Colombo — sin algo de tamil vas a depender del traductor y de la buena voluntad, que sobra. No existe comunidad nómada ni hispana: no vas a encontrar meetups de extranjeros ni un grupo de WhatsApp de recién llegados. Lo que sí hay es una sociedad muy hospitalaria donde te invitan a casa rápido si haces el esfuerzo, y los eventos de la universidad y del circuito tecnológico local son la puerta más realista para conocer gente. Es una ciudad para hacer amigos locales, no para hacer networking remoto.Daily life runs in Tamil. Sinhala is barely used, and English shows up at hotels, the university, and among younger or diaspora folks — far less on the street than in Colombo, so without some Tamil you'll lean on a translator and on goodwill, which there's plenty of. There's no nomad or Spanish-speaking community: no expat meetups, no newcomers' WhatsApp group. What there is is a genuinely hospitable society that invites you home fast if you make an effort, and university or local tech events are the most realistic door to meeting people. It's a city for making local friends, not for remote-work networking.
