It was the capital of the Kingdom of Jimma in the 19th century, and on Jiren hill the palace of King Abba Jifar II still stands. It's a market city at around 1,780 metres, ringed by green hills and plantations, with a large university that gives it youthful energy. You come here for coffee, for Oromo history and as a gateway to the Kaffa forest.
