Adís Abeba
Aprox. 2,757,729 habitantesApprox. 2,757,729 people
Addis Ababa is the capital of Ethiopia and one of the highest in the world, at about 2,355 m above sea level, giving it a cool, spring-like climate despite being near the equator. Its name means "new flower". It's the political heart of Africa —home to the African Union— and the gateway to the birthplace of coffee and some of the oldest human fossils. A chaotic, young city in full transformation, with a rich culture of its own unlike anywhere else on the continent.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Adís Abeba? How much do you need per month in Adís Abeba?
Addis works as a base if you're curious and flexible, and badly if you live on video calls: the internet is slow and unstable, and the government has a real track record of shutting it down regionally or nationwide. What you get in return is spring-like weather most of the year at ≈2,350 m, genuinely cheap local food, a serious coffee culture, and a huge international scene built around the African Union and the UN. The catch: housing in the areas where foreigners actually live is expensive for what Ethiopia is, and the birr went through a brutal devaluation after the currency was floated — treat every dollar figure below as approximate and re-check it on arrival.

This is the weak link, and the main reason to think twice. Home fiber exists in Bole and the newer buildings, but real-world speeds are modest and consistency is worse than the number on the plan; "fast" packages are expensive for what they deliver. Ethio Telecom was a state monopoly for decades and Safaricom only entered in 2022, so competition is still young. Mobile 4G works acceptably around the city, with dead patches. The serious part: Ethiopia has a documented history of internet shutdowns — nationwide ones tied to school exams, months-long social media blocks, and long regional blackouts during conflict — plus frequent power cuts. VPN use is common and sometimes blocked too. If your income depends on being reliably online, plan for it: two SIMs (Ethio plus Safaricom), a power station or UPS, and the honest possibility of losing days. Some people talk about Starlink as a plan B; check availability, legality and current cost before you count on it.
CoworkingCoworking
Small but real, and driven by Ethiopian startups and NGOs more than by passing nomads. iceaddis is the city's veteran innovation hub and xHub Addis has been on the entrepreneurship circuit for years — confirm they're still open and at what address before you show up, because these spaces move. Beyond those, several office buildings and hotels in Bole and Kazanchis rent desks by the month. Expect ≈US$50–120 monthly, and ask specifically about backup power and backup internet before you pay — that's the actual differentiator here, not the coffee. Plenty of people end up working from cafés, since Addis has genuine coffee culture (Tomoca is more a stand-up espresso bar than an office; Kaldi's and Garden of Coffee are easier to sit and work in), but treat café wifi as email-grade, not call-grade.
Bole (Bole Medhanialem, Bole Atlas) is where most foreigners land: newest buildings, furnished apartments, restaurants, gyms, and close to the airport — also the priciest and the noisiest, with permanent construction. Old Airport, near the embassies and the international schools, is the quiet, leafy, low-rise option — favored by families and long-stayers, worse for nightlife, still not cheap. Kazanchis is the institutional zone (UNECA, hotels, offices): central and walkable to meetings, though much of it has been flattened and rebuilt by the recent urban redevelopment, so check what's actually there today before signing anything. Gerji, CMC and Summit, east of Bole, are where you get real space for the money — condo blocks, more local, more Ethiopian neighbors — at the cost of a longer, traffic-heavy commute into the center.
ComunidadCommunity
Facebook and WhatsApp expat groups are the real channel for everything — apartments, furniture, events, rides — much more than any nomad app. The Spanish-speaking community is tiny, essentially diplomats and aid workers; don't count on it. English gets you through Bole and the whole professional world; on the street, in the minibus and at the market it's Amharic, and learning greetings and numbers changes both your day and your price.
Six things a friend would tell you. The currency. Ethiopia floated the birr in 2024 and it lost enormous value fast, with high inflation since; any figure in dollars here is a snapshot, not a promise. Re-check prices when you arrive. Cash and forex. It's still largely a cash economy — foreign cards work in few places, ATM limits are low, and changing money has its own rules. Bring clean USD cash and ask locally how people are actually doing it. Foreigner pricing. Dual pricing ("faranji price") is normal in markets and taxis; it isn't hostility, it's the game. Ask a local what something costs before you buy. Altitude and rain. You're at ≈2,350 m: give yourself a week before doing anything athletic, expect worse sleep at first, and pack for nights colder than you'd guess for East Africa. June to September is heavy rain — mud, awful traffic; the dry months are glorious. Security by geography, not by street. Addis itself is comparatively calm for violent crime (watch your pockets in Merkato and Piassa), but parts of the surrounding regions have had active conflict, states of emergency and road closures. Don't improvise overland travel; check the situation before every trip. Housing and visas. There's no digital nomad visa — you come on an e-visa you apply for online before flying (visa on arrival is no longer reliable for every nationality) and extensions are a bureaucratic errand. Rental contracts for foreigners often demand several months up front and are frequently informal; get the terms in writing and never pay a big deposit before seeing the actual unit. Also worth knowing: the city's large-scale "corridor" redevelopment has demolished and relocated whole blocks in recent years, so entire streets change fast.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
