Hobart

Aprox. 216,656 habitantesApprox. 216,656 people

Hobart is the capital of Tasmania, the island south of the Australian mainland, and the country's second-oldest city. It's wedged between the River Derwent and the bulk of Mount Wellington (kunanyi to Aboriginal Tasmanians), often snow-capped in winter. It's small, a working harbor, with a food and arts scene far bigger than its size, largely thanks to MONA, an eccentric private museum that put the city on the world map. It's also a gateway to Antarctica: research vessels dock here. The air is clean, the latitude high, and the weather cool and changeable all year.

Mejor épocaBest time

The southern summer (December to February) is mild and bright with long days. Winter is cold, with snow on Mount Wellington. Always pack layers: the weather turns fast.

PresupuestoBudget

Australia is expensive and Tasmania is no exception. Food and lodging add up; markets and outdoor eating ease the cost a little.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Hobart? How much do you need per month in Hobart?

Hobart works if what you want is serious wilderness twenty minutes from your desk, a small, safe city you can walk across, and income in dollars or euros that can absorb Australian prices. It does not work if you're coming to cut costs: Australia is expensive and Tasmania has thin rental supply with real competition for every place, especially if you want something short-term or furnished. It's also not a nomad hub — there's no coworker scene to speak of and no digital nomad visa, so most foreigners who stay for months are here on a working holiday or studying.

Home internet runs on NBN, the national Australian network. The usual plans in Hobart are sold as 50/20 or 100/20 Mbps, and what actually reaches you depends on the tech on your street: fibre to the premises is great; fibre to the node with copper for the last stretch can land well below the plan speed. Before you sign a lease, ask what NBN technology that address has — it's the difference between working comfortably and suffering. Australia has spent the last couple of years lifting speeds on the higher plans in full-fibre areas, so if the place has it you can buy a lot more speed for a little more money; on copper that doesn't apply. Reliability is generally good and there are no systematic outages. What you will notice is latency: Tasmania reaches the mainland by undersea cable, so you add a few extra milliseconds to servers in Sydney or Melbourne, and Europe or the Americas are simply far away. Mobile: coverage in Hobart and around it is fine on all three carriers, with Telstra clearly the strongest across Tasmania; step out into the mountains or the west coast and the map empties fast, with Telstra often the only thing that works. Don't assume you can work from any town on the island.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is small, and it's only fair to say so: Hobart is a city of a quarter million, so there are a handful of coworking spaces, mostly in the centre and along the waterfront toward Salamanca, plus the odd startup- or university-linked hub. Don't expect Lisbon or Medellín energy with events every night and people cycling through monthly; the desk next to you is more likely a local consultant or someone building a business on the island than another passing nomad. A monthly hot desk runs around ≈US$200–320 and several places sell day passes, which is the smart move if you won't go daily. Real alternatives: the state library downtown and a genuinely strong café culture, though good cafés don't love laptop campers at peak hours. I'd rather not name specific spaces since I can't vouch for what's still open — look them up on arrival and buy a day pass before committing to a month.

North Hobart is where younger people live and where life actually happens: the Elizabeth Street strip has restaurants, bars and a cinema, and it's about a 20-minute walk to the centre. The CBD and the waterfront stretch toward Salamanca and Battery Point is the most walkable and touristy part, with modern apartments and prices to match; Battery Point is gorgeous and quiet, but expensive and fairly genteel. Sandy Bay revolves around the university campus, so there are more sharehouses, frequent buses and student life, plus river views if you pay for them. If money is tight, people head north along the Derwent to Moonah and Glenorchy — much cheaper, well served by buses, and variable block to block: walk them by day and by night before you sign anything. West and South Hobart are leafy residential areas with direct access up toward the kunanyi/Mt Wellington trails.

ComunidadCommunity

Daily life is in English, full stop. There's a Latin community — mostly young working-holiday people and university students — but it's small and there's no Hispanic neighbourhood: if your English is shaky you'll struggle with paperwork, rental applications and job interviews. The upside of a small city is that meeting people happens fast if you join something with a fixed schedule: hiking, rowing or sailing clubs, choirs, volunteering, university life. Salamanca Market on Saturdays and MONA are the classic meeting points. The downside is that almost nobody is passing through: people already have their lifelong friends and the circle opens slowly, so the first month can feel lonely, especially in winter when it gets dark early and everyone goes home.

First and most serious: finding somewhere to live. Tasmania has had tight rental supply for years and there's genuine competition for every place — you'll be asked for rental history, references and proof of income, and as a newly arrived foreigner without a local job you start at a disadvantage. Almost everything is offered on 12-month leases; for shorter stays most people end up in a sharehouse or paying Airbnb rates, which spike in summer with tourism. Watch the arithmetic too: rents are advertised PER WEEK in Australian dollars, so that "$480" listing is about AU$2,080 a month — convert before you get excited. Second: winter. Hobart is one of Australia's coldest capitals, many houses are poorly insulated with expensive electric heating, and damp and mould are a real issue — ask how a place is heated before you sign. Third: the visa. Australia has no digital nomad visa; a tourist authorisation covers short stays and working on it is grey territory. The normal route for staying months is a working holiday visa (age-limited, and not every Latin American country has an agreement) or a student visa, and those visas usually require health cover. Check the official Australian government rules, not a forum. Fourth: isolation and transport. You leave the island by plane, almost always via Melbourne or Sydney; there's also a ferry to Victoria, but it sails from Devonport, about three and a half hours away by car. Within Hobart it's buses only, thin at night and on weekends, and plenty of people end up buying a car. And however cool it feels, the summer sun here burns hard: the UV index is among the highest in the world, so take sunscreen seriously.
