Sydney is one of the world's most beautiful cities, and it knows it: a dazzling harbor, the Opera House, surf beaches minutes from downtown and an unbeatable outdoor lifestyle. Pricey and far, but with sky-high quality of life and near-constant sun. The reward is worth the flight.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Sídney? How much do you need per month in Sídney?

Sydney works as a base if your income is solid and paid in dollars or euros: in exchange you get beaches half an hour from downtown, public transport that actually works, decent internet, and one of the safest, most livable cities anywhere. It does not work if you're here to stretch a budget or to settle in for a year without paperwork: rent is among the most expensive on earth, there's almost no rental stock, and Australia has no digital nomad visa. Also watch the clock: if your clients are in the Americas or Europe, you'll be working before sunrise most days.

Home internet runs on the NBN, the national network. A 100 Mbps plan costs ≈US$60–70/month and feels solid in buildings with fibre to the premises (FTTP); in buildings still served by copper (FTTN) or HFC cable, real speeds drop a lot — so ask which technology the building has BEFORE you sign a lease or book a long Airbnb. That's the difference between a steady 90 Mbps and a shaky 25. Video calls are rarely an issue and the grid is stable: no scheduled blackouts, just the occasional storm outage. On mobile there are three real networks: Telstra (priciest, and the one that holds up outside the city), Optus and TPG/Vodafone (cheaper, patchy at the edges); Optus still carries the reputation from its 2023 nationwide outage, so if your work depends on your phone, pay for Telstra. A prepaid SIM with 30–50 GB runs ≈US$20–28/month.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is deep and fairly corporate — coworking here serves employed people and startups, not backpackers with a laptop. You've got startup-ecosystem spaces like Fishburners and Tank Stream Labs (CBD) and fintech-focused Stone & Chalk, plus larger chains like Hub Australia and The Commons with sites in the CBD, Surry Hills and the Inner West. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$260–400 and a dedicated desk ≈US$400–600; most sell day passes if you want to try first, and pricing changes often, so ask for a quote. Cafés are outstanding but they're not offices: at lunchtime they'll want your table back, and many of the good ones deliberately have no power outlets. Public libraries (the State Library of NSW on Macquarie Street, Green Square, Darling Square) are free, have good wifi, and will save you a full workday.

Surry Hills, Darlinghurst and Potts Point are the classic core: walkable, packed with cafés and bars, 15 minutes on foot to downtown, and full of studios and small flats — the priciest per square meter but the easiest place to live car-free. The Inner West (Newtown, Erskineville, Marrickville, Enmore) is where most people who stay for months end up: younger, the best food in the city, good train links; Marrickville is still the most affordable of the bunch, though it has gentrified hard and the gap with Newtown has narrowed. If you came for the water, Bondi, Coogee and Randwick are the beach corridor where half the world's expats live — brutal prices in summer and no train at the sand (you get off at Bondi Junction and take a bus, or ride the light rail to Randwick), but it's the full fantasy. Across the harbour, Manly is gorgeous with a direct ferry downtown: half an hour over the water instead of a train carriage, though it cuts you off from the rest of the city.

ComunidadCommunity

Daily life happens in English and there's no way around it — with intermediate English you'll be fine, with none you'll struggle. There's a big, active Latin community (Brazilians, Colombians, Argentines, Chileans, many on student or working holiday visas), and around Kingsford and Kensington near UNSW you'll hear Spanish and Portuguese on the street. Meeting people passing through is easy: Meetup and Eventbrite are full of tech and product events, morning run clubs and surf clubs are genuinely the most effective social door here, and Inner West pubs are friendly. The hard part is the rest: Australians are warm from minute one and very slow to let you into their actual circle, which usually revolves around work, school and sport. If you're here three months, your social life will be with other foreigners — and that's fine.

Problem number one is the visa, not the money. Australia has no digital nomad visa, and mind the fine print: the cheap ETA (subclass 601) covers only a handful of passports (US, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and a few more), and the eVisitor (651) is for European passports, Spain included; if you hold a Latin American passport you're on the Visitor visa subclass 600, which costs money, is applied for before you travel, and may grant 3, 6 or 12 months depending on your case. All of them carry a no-work condition: remote work for an overseas client sits in a grey zone, and Australian border officers are among the world's most thorough at asking. The real route for a longer stay is the Working Holiday / Work and Holiday visa (subclasses 417 and 462), with an age cap and a closed list of countries — Spain, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Ecuador and Brazil do have 462 agreements; Mexico and Colombia, as far as I know, do not. Quotas and requirements change, so check the official Home Affairs list before planning anything. Second: the rental market sits near 1% vacancy, with 30 people queuing at an inspection, a bond of up to 4 weeks (the legal maximum in NSW), and agencies asking for rental history and local proof of income you don't have — the realistic plan is a room in a share house via Flatmates, not a lease of your own. Third: the time zone. Sydney is ~14–16 hours ahead of the US East Coast and ~8–10 ahead of Spain, so your meetings land at 5 or 6 in the morning. Fourth: the sun. UV here is genuinely extreme and Australia has among the highest skin cancer rates in the world; daily sunscreen is not optional. And finally, the city is very safe — the risk here is your bank balance, not the street: dinner out with a couple of drinks easily hits US$55–70 a head. Every figure on this page is converted from Australian dollars at ≈0.65 USD; if the exchange rate moves, move these with it.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
