Perth

Aprox. 1,896,548 habitantesApprox. 1,896,548 people

Perth is the capital of Western Australia and one of the world's most isolated big cities: the east coast is hours away by plane. It sits on the Swan River, with a Mediterranean climate—dry sunny summers, mild wet winters—and white-sand beaches on the Indian Ocean. The huge Kings Park overlooks the city; alongside is the historic port of Fremantle and, a ferry ride away, Rottnest Island with its quokkas.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Perth? How much do you need per month in Perth?

Perth works if your work faces Asia: it's on UTC+8, the same clock as Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei, so your day lines up with half of Asia and still catches the European morning without getting up at 5am. Add sun most of the year, genuinely good city beaches (Cottesloe, Scarborough), clean air, drinkable tap water, and a level of safety that lets you walk at night without thinking about it. It works badly if your budget is calibrated for Asia or Latin America: this is an expensive Australian city with a very tight rental market and no digital nomad visa — the tourist visa does not authorize you to work. It also works badly if your clients are in the Americas: you're 12–16 hours out of sync, and latency to the US and Europe is among the highest of any major city, because Perth is one of the most isolated metropolises on earth.

Home internet runs on the NBN, the national network: depending on your street you get fiber to the premises or fiber to the node plus copper, and that difference matters a lot. Plans are sold by speed tier — 50 and 100 Mbps are the common ones, with considerably higher tiers where the infrastructure allows — through providers like Telstra, Optus, Aussie Broadband or Superloop; most no longer lock you into a contract, but activation can take days or weeks, so for a short stay the sensible move is to rent a place that already has it. Reliability is good and steady, with no scheduled blackouts and no censorship; winter storms knock power out in leafy suburbs for a few hours a year. The thing nobody tells you: download speed is fine, but international LATENCY is high because Perth is enormously far from everything — traffic leaves by submarine cable toward Singapore or crosses the continent to Sydney. For video calls with Asia it's perfect; with Europe and especially the Americas you'll feel the lag on calls, remote desktop and gaming. Mobile: solid 4G and 5G across the metro area, with Telstra, Optus, Vodafone and budget brands like Boost or Amaysim; a prepaid plan with plenty of data runs ≈US$20–30 a month. Telstra has the best coverage and the highest price. Careful outside the city: in Western Australia signal disappears a few kilometers past the last town.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene exists but it's small and fairly corporate compared with a nomad hub: Perth is a mining, energy and engineering city, so much of the flexible space is built for consultancies and teams, not for a freelancer passing through. Most of it clusters in the CBD along St Georges Terrace and in West Perth, with a bit in Fremantle and Leederville. The local anchor is Spacecubed, which has been part of the city's startup ecosystem for years; around it sit smaller independent spaces with a looser feel. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$230–360 and a day pass ≈US$25–35; most places will give you a trial day if you ask. Real free alternatives: the State Library of WA, in the Perth Cultural Centre, has wifi, desks and power, and the municipal libraries (Victoria Park, Fremantle, Subiaco) are surprisingly good places to work. There's no shortage of quality cafés, but many are small and won't love you holding a table for two hours over one flat white at lunchtime.

Northbridge and the CBD/East Perth are the practical choice if you arrive without a car: you're inside the city's free transit zone (the CAT buses cost nothing), and you can walk to coworkings, gyms and the train. Northbridge is the bar and cheap-Asian-food district — good for eating, loud on Friday and Saturday, and rough on the street after 1am. East Perth is the opposite: quiet towers by the Swan River, boring in the good way. Mount Lawley, Highgate and Leederville are where people who stay end up: older houses with character, Beaufort Street lined with cafés and bars, markets, a train line and a ten-minute bike ride to town. It's what young local professionals pick, which is why it costs a bit more. Victoria Park sits across the river a few minutes from the center, with the city's best cheap multicultural food strip along Albany Highway; it's the best value for everyday life. Fremantle, the historic port half an hour away by train, is practically a separate city: harbor, market, breweries, a creative crowd and a slow pace — ideal if you don't need the CBD, annoying if you have to be there daily. And if you came for the beach, Scarborough and North Beach: real ocean and sunsets, but you depend on a car or the bus, and the CBD is far.

ComunidadCommunity

Day-to-day life happens in English and there's no shortcut: almost nobody here will serve you in Spanish. There's little in the way of a dedicated nomad community — Perth isn't Bali or Lisbon, it's a wealthy, normal city where people have office jobs — so if you're after coliving and weekly nomad events, you won't find that. What you will find is a huge, very mixed foreign population: British, Irish, South African, Italian, plus large Indian, Filipino, Malaysian and Chinese communities. The Spanish-speaking community is real but modest, mostly built around working-holiday folks (Colombians, Chileans, Argentines, plus Brazilians in Portuguese); there are Facebook groups and language exchanges, but don't expect a big circuit. The practical way to meet people is the Australian way: a sports club, a run group, a surf lesson, a social league, volunteering, tech meetups in the CBD, and the pub. Australians are warm and casual from minute one, but going from friendly chat to actual friendship takes months — and since a lot of the young population here is transient (working holiday, fly-in fly-out mining rosters), your circle churns more than you'd like.

First and most serious: Australia has no digital nomad visa. The tourist visa (eVisitor or ETA, typically three months per entry) does not authorize you to work, and "but my client is overseas" isn't a category the Australian government recognizes; it sits in a gray zone and the border officer decides. If you're under 30 or 35 depending on your nationality, the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417 or 462) is the clean route and what almost everyone uses — check whether your country is in the program, and with what quota, before making plans. Second: the rental market is very tight. Perth has seen some of Australia's steepest rent increases in recent years, with vacancy near record lows; the pace has eased somewhat, but landing a 6- or 12-month lease as a newcomer with no local rental or employment history is still a genuine fight (up to four weeks' bond, references, proof of income), so you'll most likely end up in short-term furnished or a share house, paying the premium. Third: the sun here is a different animal. Summer (December to February) brings very dry stretches of 35–40 °C and the UV index is brutal; Australia has among the highest skin cancer rates in the world. Sunscreen, hat, avoid midday sun — seriously; the one thing that saves the afternoon is the "Fremantle Doctor", the sea breeze that rolls in most days. And brace for the opposite in winter (June–August): rain, wind and 8–19 °C in poorly insulated houses that often have no central heating — it's colder indoors than out. Fourth: healthcare. Australia has reciprocal Medicare agreements with a handful of European countries and New Zealand, but NOT with Spain or any Latin American country: if that's your passport, an emergency without insurance gets very expensive. Fifth: isolation costs money and time. Flying to Sydney or Melbourne is 4–5 hours and not cheap; Bali, on the other hand, is ~3.5 hours away and Singapore ~5, which is Perth's real escape valve. Sixth: the city is very spread out; trains and buses work well along the corridors, but off them you're limited without a car, and everything closes early — Western Australia has more restricted trading hours than Sydney or Melbourne, especially on Sundays. Finally, if you stay past six months you may become an Australian tax resident: check that before, not after.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
