Harare is Zimbabwe's capital, sitting on the country's high plateau at around 1,480 m, which gives it a mild, temperate climate most of the year despite the tropical latitude. It's a city of wide, tree-lined avenues laid out on a grid, with jacarandas that turn it purple in October. The centre holds offices and trade; residential suburbs ring it, and to the south sprawls the busy Mbare market. It works as a calm base for exploring the country rather than a postcard tourist magnet.

The cool dry season, May to August, is most comfortable — sunny days and cool nights thanks to the altitude. Rains fall November to March, when everything greens up.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Harare? How much do you need per month in Harare?

Harare works if you have a concrete reason to be in Zimbabwe — regional work, an NGO, a project, family — not as a generic nomad base. It will surprise you twice over: it isn't cheap (the economy runs on US dollars and almost everything is imported from South Africa, so USD prices are noticeably higher than you'd expect from an African capital), and the power goes out often. In exchange: English everywhere, genuinely great weather thanks to the ~1,500 m altitude, unusually warm people, and zero tourist saturation. If your priorities are "cheap and full of nomads", this isn't your city.

Starlink se licenció en Zimbabue en 2024 y bastante gente lo usa como plan B o directo como plan A; confirma disponibilidad y precio actual antes de contar con él.Fibre exists and is normal across the northern suburbs: Liquid Home (the ZOL Fibroniks brand), TelOne and Utande (from Dandemutande) are the names you'll hear. Packages are advertised from around 10 up to 100 Mbps, and what most people actually take at home sits at the lower end of that; when there's power, video calls hold up fine. That's the catch: the bottleneck in Harare isn't bandwidth, it's electricity. Without an inverter or UPS for your router, every ZESA cut takes your internet down even though you paid for fibre. Treat it as a non-negotiable when house-hunting. On mobile, Econet has the best coverage (NetOne second) and 4G works in the city, but data is expensive for what you get. Starlink was licensed in Zimbabwe in 2024 and plenty of people use it as plan B or straight-up plan A; check current availability and pricing before counting on it.

CoworkingCoworking

Small but real scene, driven by the local startup, tech and creative ecosystem rather than by passing nomads. The name that comes up most is Moto Republik, a Harare creative hub; there's also an Impact Hub presence in the city. Verify they're still operating and ask about pricing directly, since spaces in Zimbabwe open, move and close. A flexible monthly desk usually lands somewhere between ≈US$60 and ≈US$150 depending on the space, and here's what actually matters: ask whether they have solar or generator backup, because a coworking without backup is useless to you. Plenty of people end up working from cafés in Avondale and Borrowdale or from hotel lobbies (which almost always do have a generator), or just build a home office once they've found a place with an inverter.

Avondale — the closest thing to a walkable base: near the centre, with its shopping centre, cafés and restaurants, a mix of young locals and foreigners, and cheaper than the deep north. It's where I'd send you first. Mount Pleasant, Belgravia and Milton Park — green, quiet, near the University of Zimbabwe and the creative circuit; garden cottages are everywhere here, and they're the cheapest realistic way to live alone in Harare. Borrowdale, Chisipite and Ballantyne Park — the affluent north (Sam Levy's Village is here): the best infrastructure and the houses most likely to have solar and their own borehole, but expensive and completely car-dependent. Highlands and Newlands — the middle ground: residential, quiet, well placed between the centre and the north, good value if you don't need street life.

ComunidadCommunity

Language isn't an issue: English is official and everyone in Harare speaks it, so you're functional from day one (Shona is the everyday language between locals, and learning a few phrases opens doors). Zimbabweans have a well-earned reputation for being extremely polite and warm. Now the honest part: the foreign community here is NGOs, diplomats, mining, agriculture and missionaries — not digital nomads. You'll be an oddity. And there's essentially no Spanish-speaking community; be ready to go months without speaking Spanish. You meet people the analogue way: events at the creative and tech hubs, the art and live-music scene, and above all the sports and social clubs (cricket, rugby, golf, running), which are still the social engine for the middle class and expats in Harare. WhatsApp runs everything: the groups are the city's real directory, so get yourself added to the ones that matter.

Power is the issue, not a footnote. Scheduled load shedding (ZESA) is a fact of life and gets worse in drought years, since much of the generation depends on Lake Kariba. Before signing any lease, ask — and see with your own eyes — whether there's solar with batteries or a generator, and whether there's a borehole with a water tank: municipal water supply fails too. A beautiful house with no backup is unlivable if you need to work. Money. Zimbabwe runs on two currencies: the US dollar rules on the street and the ZiG (introduced in 2024) coexists with it, so your change may come back in ZiG or as store credit. Bring US dollars in clean notes and small denominations; ATMs rarely dispense USD and international cards work erratically. For local payments, EcoCash. Rent. Paid in USD cash, almost always deposit plus one to three months upfront, and contracts are often informal; see the place in person and never transfer money sight unseen. Visa. There's no nomad visa. Zimbabwe sorts passports into categories (some enter visa-free, many get a visa on arrival, others must apply in advance); the norm is a 30-day tourist entry, extendable to a 90-day maximum, and it isn't a permit to work locally. Confirm your category before you fly. Health. Serious medical care is limited; anything major means evacuation to South Africa. Get insurance that includes medical evacuation — here that's not optional. Safety and weather. Violent crime is low for the region, but phone snatching and muggings happen: don't walk at night and avoid the CBD after dark. Police roadblocks are routine, so carry your documents. Rains run November to March (afternoon storms and potholes that turn into pools), and from June to August the nights get genuinely cold in houses with no heating — bring warm clothes, almost nobody expects that.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
