Bulawayo
Aprox. 699,385 habitantesApprox. 699,385 people
Bulawayo is Zimbabwe's second city and the heart of Matabeleland, home of the Ndebele people. It was King Lobengula's capital before colonisation, then became the country's great railway and industrial hub —still visible in its wide, colonial grid streets. Today it's a calm, slow-paced city with a pleasant highland climate, serving as a base for the Matobo Hills and the Khami Ruins, two of southwestern Zimbabwe's great treasures.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Bulawayo? How much do you need per month in Bulawayo?
Bulawayo works if you want a calm, spread-out, dry-climate city where English gets you everywhere and cash US dollars are what people actually use day to day: rent and local food are cheap, and it feels far quieter than Harare or Johannesburg. It doesn't work if your job depends on being online without interruption: power cuts and, above all, water rationing are routine, and your budget has to include backup (inverter, tank, borehole). Be clear-eyed: there's no nomad scene here, you'll be one of very few foreigners who isn't with an NGO, a mission or a mining company.

Fibre exists and it's the only thing you can really work on: Liquid Home (ZOL), TelOne and Utande sell home plans that in practice deliver ≈10–30 Mbps, enough for video calls as long as the package isn't capped (many are: they sell you X gigs and then throttle you). It's expensive for what it is: ≈US$50–90 a month. The problem isn't so much speed as continuity — ZESA power cuts take your router down even when the ISP is fine, so a small inverter or a UPS stops being a luxury and becomes part of the job. Mobile (Econet has the best coverage, NetOne next) works fine inside the city and makes a decent plan B, but data is pricey and burns fast. Before signing any lease, ask which provider actually reaches THAT house: fibre is laid street by street, not neighbourhood by neighbourhood, and some areas only get wireless.
CoworkingCoworking
I won't hand you names because I don't know of a stable, publicly open space here — what tends to exist are innovation hubs tied to universities or NGOs, with irregular hours and access, opening and closing with the funding. People working remotely do it from home with their own power backup, and use cafés and hotel lobbies downtown and in Hillside for meetings, since those have wifi and a generator. If coworking is non-negotiable for you, this isn't your city; if you're fine working from home, you save that entire budget line (and put it into an inverter and water instead).
Hillside and Khumalo are where almost everyone from outside ends up: houses with gardens, tree-lined streets, close to shops and restaurants. Burnside and Matsheumhlope are the greener, more residential version with big plots — excellent if you land a house with a borehole, awkward without a car. Suburbs and Riverside put you within walking distance of the city centre and are the most walkable part of town. High-density townships like Nkulumane, Pumula, Luveve or Cowdray Park are where most people actually live, but almost no outsiders rent there and the daily logistics (water, transport, distances) are considerably harder.
ComunidadCommunity
Language isn't a barrier: English is official and everyone handles it, though daily life happens in isiNdebele (learning sawubona, ngiyabonga and a few more phrases genuinely opens doors). Meeting people is another story: there are no nomad meetups and no Spanish-speaking community — the few foreigners around are with NGOs, missions or mining, or are returning diaspora, and the city has spent decades losing young people to South Africa and the UK. What does work is what always works in a smaller city: sports clubs, church, the gym, the music and theatre scene (Bulawayo has a real cultural tradition and its own arts festival), and simply being a neighbour. Old-fashioned friendships: slow, but real.
Water, before anything else. Bulawayo lives with chronic shortage and zone-by-zone rationing: some suburbs go days at a time without municipal water. Before signing any lease, ask the same thing three times — is there a borehole? is there a JoJo tank? which days does water actually reach this street? That separates a workable stay from a miserable one, and no listing will tell you. Second: power cuts are normal, budget for backup from day one. Third, money: this runs on cash US dollars (the ZiG exists, but almost nobody prefers it), notes must be clean and untorn, small change is a permanent problem — you'll get it back in ZiG or literally in sweets — and landlords typically want two or three months upfront in cash. Fourth, visas: Zimbabwe has no nomad visa; most people enter on a 30-day visa on arrival, paid in cash USD, and extend it at immigration for a short further period. This isn't a country where you can legally settle in for a year. Fifth: there's decent private healthcare for everyday things, but anything serious means flying to Harare or Johannesburg, so insurance with medical evacuation isn't optional. Logistics: the airport has very few routes and you'll almost always connect through Harare or Joburg, and there's no Uber — taxis are arranged by phone or WhatsApp. Safety feels calmer than in other cities in the region, but opportunistic theft is real: don't walk downtown at night or wave your phone around. And the dry winter from June to August gets surprisingly cold at night, in houses with no heating.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
