It sits halfway between the country's two big cities, Harare and Bulawayo, on the main road and rail axis, which made it the industrial and service hub for the surrounding farming and mining region. It was formerly called Gwelo. It's a calm, not-very-touristy town, but useful as a waypoint and a base for exploring central Zimbabwe.
