Hamadán es una de las ciudades habitadas más antiguas del mundo: fue Ecbatana, capital de los medos y residencia de verano de los reyes persas, hace más de dos mil quinientos años. Se asienta a unos 1.800 metros al pie del monte Alvand, en el oeste de Irán, lo que le da inviernos muy fríos y nevados y veranos frescos. Su trazado moderno gira en torno a la gran plaza Imam Jomeini, de la que parten seis avenidas como radios. Aquí reposan el sabio persa Avicena y, según la tradición, Ester y Mardoqueo, lo que la convierte en un cruce de historias persa, judía e islámica.Hamadan is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world: it was Ecbatana, capital of the Medes and summer residence of the Persian kings, more than two and a half thousand years ago. It sits at around 1,800 meters at the foot of Mount Alvand, in western Iran, which gives it very cold, snowy winters and cool summers. Its modern layout radiates from the great Imam Khomeini square, with six avenues spoking out of it. The Persian sage Avicenna rests here and, by tradition, Esther and Mordechai too, making it a crossroads of Persian, Jewish and Islamic history.
