It was a Roman foundation (Glevum) and its great treasure is Gloucester Cathedral, one of the country's most striking medieval churches, with fan-vaulted cloisters that appeared as Hogwarts corridors in the Harry Potter films and where King Edward II is buried. Beside it, the Victorian Docks and their converted brick warehouses give the city a second waterside heart.
