Chincha Alta está en la costa desértica del sur del Perú, en la región de Ica, a unas tres horas por la Panamericana desde Lima. Es tierra plana, seca y soleada casi todo el año, y es sobre todo el corazón de la cultura afroperuana: la zona de El Carmen y las haciendas cercanas son cuna de música negra, cajón, festejo y platos criollos. También es región de pisco y vino: los valles del entorno están llenos de viñedos y bodegas. La ciudad quedó muy golpeada por el terremoto de 2007 y sigue reconstruyéndose, pero su identidad cultural es fuerte y muy específica.Chincha Alta lies on Peru's southern desert coast, in the Ica region, about three hours down the Panamericana from Lima. The land is flat, dry and sunny most of the year, and above all this is the heartland of Afro-Peruvian culture: the El Carmen area and nearby haciendas are the cradle of Black music, the cajón drum, festejo dance and criollo cooking. It's also pisco and wine country, with vineyards and bodegas across the surrounding valleys. The city was badly hit by the 2007 earthquake and is still rebuilding, but its cultural identity is strong and very specific.
