In November 2023, through Legislative Decree 1582, Peru added a "Digital Nomad" (remote worker) migratory status to its Migration Law: a status meant for foreigners who work remotely for an employer or clients OUTSIDE Peru, without earning Peruvian-source income. It's a temporary track, not permanent residency. Be honest with yourself: the law created the category, but its operational rollout (regulations, exact income thresholds, fees, and timelines) has been slow and may not be fully available or may change. Before you move a single document, confirm the current status of the process directly with MIGRACIONES. In practice, many nomads still enter Peru as tourists (stays of up to ≈183 days a year) and work remotely while this pathway matures.
Legislative Decree 1582 requires proving sufficient, stable income from abroad, but the law does NOT set a single public figure; the specific threshold (in USD or soles) is left to the regulations and consular requirements. I'm not giving you a number because I can't confirm one for Peru with certainty, and a made-up figure could cost you a rejection. Check the current amount directly with MIGRACIONES or the Peruvian consulate before applying.
It's a temporary status. The law frames it as renewable temporary residence (these programs are usually ≈1 year, extendable), but the exact term and renewals depend on the regulations and on your resolution. The term that actually applies to you is stated in the resolution you receive: confirm it there.
Tiempo de trámiteProcessing time
There's no published, reliable decision timeline for this status specifically; MIGRACIONES procedures usually take several weeks, but it can vary a lot depending on the route (consulate abroad vs. change of status inside Peru). Check the official source; your actual timeline will be on your application receipt.

¿Qué pasaporte tienes?Which passport do you hold?
The permit is the same for everyone; what changes is how you apply: your route, your paperwork and your timings.
La regla general y los 10 pasaportes con reglas propias →The general rule and all 10 passports with specific rules →
The core rule is the same for everyone: you must prove you work remotely for a company or clients outside Peru and that your income is NOT Peruvian-source, with documents apostilled (or legalized if your country isn't a Hague Convention party) and translated into Spanish if they're in another language. What changes with your passport is more the BEFORE than the process itself. First, whether you need a consular visa just to ENTER Peru: most Latin Americans, Europeans, and US citizens enter visa-free as tourists, but Venezuelans and Cubans, among others, do need an entry visa, which complicates filing from inside the country. Second, the apostille: if your country isn't a Hague party (e.g. Cuba), you'll need slower consular legalization instead. Third, language: those whose paperwork is already in Spanish (Latin America, Spain) skip the translations that US, UK, and other applicants must do. And note one tax point that applies to everyone: if you reside in Peru for more than 183 days in a 12-month period you may become tax-domiciled.
You enter Peru visa-free as a tourist, so you can scout the country before deciding. Mexico is a Hague Convention party, so your criminal record gets an apostille (not consular legalization). Your official Spanish-language documents need no translation.
As an EU citizen you enter Peru visa-free. Double advantage: Spain is a Hague apostille party and your documents are already in Spanish, so you skip the certified translation others need. The background check is usually the slowest part.
You enter visa-free and with Spanish-language paperwork (apostille only, no translation). You also have a strong alternative: as an Argentine you can access residency under the Mercosur Agreement in Peru, which does lead toward more stable residence; if your goal is to stay long term, compare that route with the digital-nomad one.
Since Colombia is a Community of Andean Nations member, you can enter Peru with just your national ID card, no passport. Spanish-language paperwork (no translation) and Colombia is a Hague apostille party, so your background check is apostilled. As an Andean national, also check CAN migratory facilities as an alternative.
Pasaporte de Estados UnidosUnited States passport
Entras sin visa como turista. EE. You enter visa-free as a tourist. The US is a Hague apostille party, so your background check is apostilled (note: the apostille is issued by the issuing state's Secretary of State or the federal State Department depending on the document). Anything in English needs an official Spanish translation.
Critical point: Venezuelans need a consular visa to ENTER Peru (Peru has required it since 2019), so you can't simply arrive and file inside the country; confirm the current entry visa first. Venezuela is a Hague apostille party, though getting apostilles and background checks from Venezuela can be slow and difficult: allow extra time.
Double friction: Cubans generally need a visa to enter Peru, and Cuba is NOT a Hague Convention party, so your documents can't be apostilled and instead need consular legalization, which is slower and has more steps. Plan well in advance.
Pasaporte de Bolivia y EcuadorBolivia and Ecuador passport
As Community of Andean Nations members, you enter Peru with a national ID card, no passport, and with Spanish-language paperwork. Both are Hague Convention parties, so your background check is apostilled. Also check the CAN residency route as an alternative.
You enter visa-free and with Spanish-language documents (apostille only, no translation). Chile is a Hague apostille party. As a neighboring, regional country, the document side is straightforward for you.
Pasaporte de Reino Unido y resto de la UEUnited Kingdom and rest of the EU passport
You enter Peru visa-free as tourists and your countries are Hague apostille parties. The practical difference is language: any document in English (or another non-Spanish language) needs an official Spanish translation, a step Spanish-speaking applicants skip.

Antes de solicitarBefore you apply
Get these ready — several take weeks and the application can't start without them.
Confirmation that the pathway is live: because it's a new, slowly-regulated category, check with MIGRACIONES or the consulate that the Digital Nomad status can already be filed and with what exact requirements, before spending on apostilles.
Tramitarlos y apostillarlos suele tomar ≈2–6 semanas: empieza temprano.Criminal/police background check from your home or residence country, apostilled (or legalized if your country isn't a Hague party). Obtaining and apostilling it usually takes ≈2–6 weeks: start early.
Proof of remote work with a foreign entity (contract/letter or evidence of your own clients) and its official Spanish translation if it's in another language. Preparing the certified translation adds days.
Several months of bank statements showing stable income from abroad. Gather them ahead of time, as a continuous history is usually required.
Health insurance covering you in Peru for the entire stay, purchased BEFORE you apply. Confirm with MIGRACIONES whether a minimum coverage amount or a specific insurer is required.
A passport with comfortable validity (6+ months) and, if your nationality requires it (e.g. Venezuela, Cuba), the ENTRY visa to Peru sorted out before planning any in-country filing.
El proceso, paso a pasoThe process, step by step
7 pasos7 steps1Confirma que la vía está operativa y que calificasConfirm the pathway is live and that you qualify
Before spending on apostilles, check the MIGRACIONES portal (gob.pe/migraciones) or ask the Peruvian consulate in your country whether the Digital Nomad status can already be filed and what the current requirements are. Because the category is new and its regulation has been slow, this saves you from preparing a file you can't yet submit.
2Reúne y prepara la prueba de trabajo remotoGather and prepare your remote-work proof
Collect your foreign employer's contract or letter, or evidence of your clients/own business outside Peru, making clear your income is FOREIGN-source. Add several months of bank statements showing stable income. If they're in another language, plan for an official Spanish translation.
3Apostilla o legaliza tus documentos oficialesApostille or legalize your official documents
Official documents issued abroad (criminal/police background checks and any others requested) must be apostilled under the Hague Convention. If your country isn't a signatory (e.g. Cuba), you'll need consular legalization instead, which is slower. This step can take weeks: start it early.
You can apply for the visa at a Peruvian consulate before traveling (through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), or, if you're already in Peru with regular status, request the change of migratory status at MIGRACIONES. Confirm which of the two routes is enabled for digital nomads, because both aren't always available.
5Presenta la solicitud y paga la tasaFile the application and pay the fee
Fill out the relevant form (via MIGRACIONES' online Agencia Digital / Mesa de Partes if you file inside Peru, or the consular form if you apply abroad), attach your file, and pay the official fee. Keep the receipt: it shows your case number and the estimated timeline.
6Espera la resolución y responde requerimientosWait for the resolution and answer any requests
An officer reviews the file and may request extra information; reply within the stated deadline or the case is closed. Approval arrives as a resolution defining your migratory status and its validity period.
7Ingresa, regístrate y saca tu Carné de ExtranjeríaEnter, register, and get your Carné de Extranjería
If you applied from abroad, enter Peru within your visa's window. As a temporary resident, get your Carné de Extranjería (CE) from MIGRACIONES: it's your ID as a foreigner and you'll need it for banking, renting, and almost any formal procedure.
Approval starts the clocks: a window to enter the country and deadline-bound steps after you land.
Read your resolution carefully: it states your specific migratory status, its validity period, and the conditions. That document overrides any general estimate you may have read.
If you applied at a consulate abroad, check the deadline to ENTER Peru with your visa: it's stated on the visa; travel within that window or it lapses.
Once in Peru as a temporary resident, get your Carné de Extranjería (CE) at MIGRACIONES within the stated deadline. The CE is your foreigner ID and carries your (CE) number for banking, renting, and paperwork.
If your activity requires it, assess registering with SUNAT and the corresponding enrollment; remember the digital-nomad status is for foreign-source income, not for working with Peruvian clients.
Key tax point: if you reside in Peru for more than 183 days within a 12-month period, you may acquire tax-domiciled status (effective from January 1 of the following year). Plan this with an accountant if you're staying.
To renew, start the extension before your resolution's term expires. If you're aiming for more stable residence later, confirm with MIGRACIONES whether time under this status counts toward other routes, since temporary statuses don't always accrue toward residency.
