Iquitos
Aprox. 437,620 habitantesApprox. 437,620 people
The rubber boom left tiles and European mansions; rivers, markets and boats still organize daily life. For orientation: Belén (a neighborhood and market adapted to seasonal floods); and Centro Histórico (the rubber-boom grid beside the Tarapaca waterfront). Verifiable anchors are Casa de Fierro (a metal building associated with the rubber era); and Malecón Tarapacá (an elevated promenade overlooking the Amazon river system).

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Iquitos? How much do you need per month in Iquitos?
Iquitos is cheap and unlike anywhere else: it's often called the largest city on earth you can't drive to — you arrive by plane or by river, deep in the Amazon. It works if you're here for the jungle, the river and local life, your job tolerates shaky internet, and you can handle 30-34 °C with humidity 365 days a year. It doesn't work if your day is back-to-back video calls, if you need a coworking and a nomad crowd (there's basically neither), or if heat wrecks you: for that, Peru has Lima, Arequipa or Cusco, all far easier to work from.

This is Iquitos' weak spot, and it's what decides whether you can live here. The major carriers do sell home internet in the city, with plans around ≈US$25-40/month, but treat advertised speeds with suspicion: Iquitos hangs off long-haul links and what actually reaches your apartment tends to fall well short of the brochure, especially at peak hours. On top of that the city runs on an isolated power grid: outages and storms knock the service out fairly often, and a couple of hours offline is not news here. Mobile 4G in town is decent (Claro, Movistar, Entel and Bitel all operate in Peru); it drops off fast along the riverbanks and once you leave the city. If your job is video calls: bring SIMs from two different carriers as backup, consider a UPS or battery for the router, and test the apartment's ACTUAL connection (your laptop, a real video call, at your working hour) before you pay the first month.
CoworkingCoworking
There's barely a scene. Iquitos isn't a nomad hub, and I can't point you to any established coworking by name — the spaces that open here tend to be small and short-lived, so don't trust an old list you found online. In reality people work from home with the A/C on, from cafés downtown and along the Malecón, or from a hotel lobby. If you do find something coworking-ish, budget on the order of ≈US$50-100/month, but treat that as an estimate, not a confirmed price. Practical advice: here your apartment IS your office, so spend on it — good internet, air conditioning and a real desk are worth more than anything else in your budget.
Centro / Malecón Tarapacá — the walkable part: restaurants, cafés, ATMs, river views and the old rubber-boom mansions. It's where almost every foreigner staying a month lands; it's also the noisiest, thanks to the swarm of mototaxis. Around Plaza 28 de Julio — a few blocks off the center, more residential and cheaper, still fine on foot. San Juan Bautista — south, toward the airport: bigger houses, greener, far quieter and cheaper, but you'll depend on mototaxis for everything. Punchana / Bellavista Nanay — north, on the Nanay river: neighborhood feel, river breeze and the boats out to the beaches and nearby villages; a good bet if you're staying several months and want calm. Belén, with its market and floating section, is worth visiting as an outing, but it's not a place to live or to walk around at night.
ComunidadCommunity
Don't expect a nomad community: there are no remote-work meetups and no cafés full of laptops here. What there is is a small and rather particular foreign crowd built around ayahuasca retreats, jungle tourism, and biology/conservation/NGO people; they all cross paths in the same five or six downtown cafés and restaurants, so if you go out, you'll know half of them within two weeks. Daily life runs in Spanish, and locals are warm and chatty: if you speak Spanish you'll make local friends fast; if you don't, you'll struggle outside the tourist circuit, because English is barely used. Iquitos is for plugging into a Peruvian city, not for living in an expat bubble.
The heat never lets up: roughly 30-34 °C with high humidity all year, no "cool season". That means air conditioning, and air conditioning means power bills that can double what you paid elsewhere — ask to see the apartment's electricity bill BEFORE you sign, and ask how bad the outages are on that block. Loreto has recurring dengue outbreaks: repellent, a mosquito net, and check your vaccines with a doctor before you come (yellow fever is the standard recommendation for the Amazon); drink bottled or boiled water. High water and heavy rain run roughly December to May (peaking around April-May): it changes the landscape, access to some areas, and tour prices. Mototaxi noise downtown is constant — look for an interior room. On safety, it's mostly opportunistic theft: don't walk around with your phone out, take care at the market and in Belén, and use a mototaxi you know at night. Remember you can only leave by plane or boat: a flight to Lima usually runs ≈US$60-150 each way, and anything imported costs more and comes in less variety; for anything seriously medical the real answer is flying to Lima, so come with insurance that covers evacuation. Rentals are informal, often cash and without a contract: pay month to month at first. Peru grants most tourists up to 183 days per calendar year, assigned on entry (you're not always given the maximum) and with no extensions, so if you plan a long stay, plan your exit from day one. And an honest word on the elephant in the room: the ayahuasca scene here ranges from serious centers to predatory operators, and there have been real incidents — if you go, research hard and never alone with a stranger.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
