Cairns is the tropical gateway to Far North Queensland, on Australia's northeast coast. The city itself is small and laid-back, hot and humid all year, but its whole reason for being is what surrounds it: it's the launch point for the Great Barrier Reef, the world's largest reef, and for the Daintree, one of the oldest rainforests on Earth. The waterfront Esplanade has a public swimming lagoon because the sea has jellyfish and crocodiles depending on the season. It's a backpacker classic: hostels, diving and day trips everywhere.
Mejor épocaBest time
Tropical with two seasons. The dry (May-October) is best: warm, less humid and good diving visibility. The wet (November-April) brings sticky heat, rain, possible cyclones and box jellyfish in the sea.
PresupuestoBudget
Australia is expensive. Backpacker beds and supermarkets ease it, but reef trips and diving cost real money; set aside budget for the tours, since they're the whole point of coming.
EntradaEntry
Australia requires a visa or electronic authorisation (ETA/eVisitor) from virtually all tourists, arranged before flying. Check which applies to your nationality.
The centre and Esplanade are walkable. Boats to the reef leave from the harbour; for the Daintree, Kuranda or Port Douglas you'll want a tour, bus or rental car.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Cairns? How much do you need per month in Cairns?
Cairns works if your plan is living next to the reef and the Daintree rainforest, diving on weekends and working Asian or Australian hours. It doesn't work if you want a cheap base: this is Australia, and even though Cairns is more affordable than Sydney or Melbourne, a comfortable month runs close to US$2,700 and the rental market is tight. Add that the nomad scene is tiny — what you'll find here is working-holiday backpackers, not laptop people — and that the time zone (AEST, UTC+10, no daylight saving in Queensland) puts you very far from clients in the Americas or Europe.

Cairns runs on NBN, Australia's national network, and that's where the catch is: depending on your street you get fibre to the premises (FTTP) or fibre to the node with copper for the last stretch (FTTN), and the second one performs noticeably worse — changing plans won't fix it. At FTTP addresses you can get plenty of headroom for work; on FTTN you're stuck with whatever the copper gives you, upload is modest, and long video calls or big uploads do bite. Before signing a lease, ask which NBN technology reaches that exact address — it varies street by street and it's the thing that most affects your daily work. Mobile 4G/5G coverage in town and along the northern beaches is solid — a prepaid SIM with 30-50 GB runs about ≈US$25 a month — and it drops off fast once you head toward the Daintree or the Tablelands. In the wet season storms and cyclones knock out power for hours or days, and your home internet with it; if your work can't stop, keep mobile data and a power bank as backup.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene is small and locally oriented: a handful of spaces downtown and near the Esplanade, aimed more at Cairns entrepreneurs, tour operators and consultants than at passing nomads. Don't expect the Chiang Mai or Medellín vibe, or weekly tech events. A monthly hot desk runs around ≈US$200-280 and a small private office climbs well past that; most places sell day passes if you want to try first. I'd rather not name spots: in cities this size places open and close fast, and I don't want to send you somewhere that's gone. Look around when you arrive and visit two or three. Real alternative: cafés downtown and in Edge Hill have good wifi and don't mind you lingering, and the Cairns public library is a decent free place to work with air conditioning — which in summer is not a small thing.
Cairns City and the Esplanade: downtown, the only genuinely walkable part, with the free public lagoon, restaurants and the marina where the reef boats leave from. This is where you stay if you don't want a car — it's also the priciest and the noisiest, with pub life running late. Edge Hill: leafy neighbourhood minutes from the centre, next to the Botanic Gardens, with the best run of cafés in town; it's one of the more sought-after areas, so don't expect savings, but it's where long-stayers end up when they want quiet without being cut off. Manunda, Westcourt and Parramatta Park: residential and clearly cheaper, but quality varies street by street — walk the block at night before you sign. Trinity Beach, Clifton Beach and Palm Cove: the northern beaches, 20-30 minutes by car, real beach and a relaxed pace, but without a car you're stuck waiting on the bus.
ComunidadCommunity
Meeting people is easy — just not necessarily the people you're picturing. Cairns lives off tourism and is full of working-holiday twenty-somethings working hostels, dive boats, hospitality and Tablelands farms — many of them clocking the regional work days they need to extend their visa: they rotate every few months, they're wide open and they go out a lot. There are plenty of Spanish speakers in that circuit — Chileans, Argentines, Colombians, Spaniards — mostly in hospitality and as divemasters, though there's no organised Hispanic community the way there is in Sydney or Melbourne. Daily life is 100% English with a thick Australian accent; if yours is intermediate, the first weeks are work. Social life runs through diving, sport, weekend markets and the pub, not through tech meetups — those barely exist here.
The weather runs the show and it deserves plain language: November to April is the wet season, with heat and humidity that genuinely wear you down, torrential rain and a real cyclone risk. That's not theoretical: in December 2023 Cyclone Jasper left historic flooding across the region, airport underwater included. Power outages lasting hours or days come with it. In that same window there are dangerous jellyfish (box jellyfish and irukandji) in the water, which is why people swim inside the stinger nets in a suit, or just use the lagoon downtown; and there are crocodiles in rivers, mangroves and estuaries all around the region — obey the signs, they're not decoration. On housing, the rental market is tight: agencies want an Australian rental history, references and usually a 6- or 12-month lease plus a four-week bond, so showing up with nothing and landing your own apartment in a week isn't realistic — nearly everyone starts in a sharehouse. Watch your fun budget too: the whole point here is the reef, and a day dive trip is not cheap; go every weekend and that line alone reshapes your month. On visas: the ETA and eVisitor don't cover most Latin American passports — Spaniards do get eVisitor, but Mexicans, Colombians, Argentines and so on normally need a Visitor visa (subclass 600). None of those let you work in Australia, and even remote work for a client abroad sits in a blurry area; if you're staying months, check your own case against official immigration information. If your country has a Work and Holiday agreement (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Peru, Ecuador and Spain, among others) and you're under 31, look into that route — there are annual quotas and they run out. And without a car Cairns feels small: outside the centre the bus limits you a lot.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
