Cagliari

Aprox. 149,257 habitantesApprox. 149,257 people

Cagliari is the capital of Sardinia, spread across an amphitheatre of hills facing the Mediterranean, at the island's south. It's a city of pale limestone and intense light, crowned by the Castello quarter, the walled medieval citadel that looms over the port. Below unfolds the Marina, a maze of old fishermen's lanes full of trattorias, and a short way off lies the Poetto, a miles-long white-sand city beach. Phoenician, Roman, Pisan and Spanish in turn, Cagliari layers that past with a lively port feel and a distinctly Sardinian flavour.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Cagliari? How much do you need per month in Cagliari?

Cagliari works if you want a cheap-for-Europe base with the sea 15 minutes away, excellent food and decent fiber, and you don't mind that daily social life happens in Italian. It's one of the more affordable regional capitals in central-southern Italy (though Palermo and Catania are still cheaper) and winters are mild, so October–May it's good value; in July and August the tourists arrive, prices climb and long-term rentals get painful to find. It doesn't work if you want a big nomad scene, laptop-friendly cafés, or cheap direct flights year-round: it's an island, and in winter a good share of routes go through Rome or Milan.

Cagliari is a pleasant surprise here: the city has solid fiber-to-the-home coverage with TIM, Vodafone, Fastweb, WindTre and Tiscali — which is Sardinian and headquartered right here, in Sa Illetta — and 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps runs about ≈US$28-38/month. It's stable, and power cuts aren't a daily concern. Two real caveats: fiber doesn't reach the whole old town evenly — in older buildings, especially in Castello and parts of Marina, you can end up on VDSL (fiber-to-the-cabinet, roughly 50–100 Mbps) because wiring those historic facades is a nightmare; and in seasonal furnished rentals the line may be disconnected, and reactivating it takes weeks. Ask BEFORE you sign whether the internet is already working, and have them run a real speed test in the flat. Mobile 4G/5G is strong in the city and at Poetto; inland Sardinia and remote coves drop fast.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene exists but it's small and more local-tech than international-nomad: spaces with dozens of desks, not hundreds, several attached to Sardinian startup incubators. The two names that are genuine local reference points are The Net Value (an incubator with workspace) and Open Campus, Tiscali's innovation campus in Sa Illetta — but note both are startup ecosystem hubs more than open coworking for passing nomads, so email ahead to see if they'll take you. Beyond those there are small independent coworkings downtown and in Quartu, though they open and close often: don't trust an old list, confirm which ones are still alive when you arrive. A fixed desk runs about ≈US$150-180/month, a hot desk around ≈US$100-120, and many sell day passes if you come and go. And the cultural detail that really matters: Italian bars aren't laptop cafés — you drink your espresso standing in 90 seconds and leave — so here coworking isn't optional, it's your office.

Villanova is the most balanced bet: low colored houses, a market, bars, walkable to everything and without Marina's tourist crush. San Benedetto revolves around its covered market (huge, one of Italy's best for fish) and is comfortable residential, with 60s–70s buildings that tend to have better internet and an elevator. Marina is the historic quarter by the port: gorgeous and packed with restaurants, but loud until late and very touristy; Castello, up top, is the postcard Cagliari, but it's stairs, slopes and old buildings — romantic for two months, tiring for six. If you prioritize beach and cheap rent, the Poetto strip and Quartu Sant'Elena put the sea in front of you for less, in exchange for depending on the bus and a pretty dead winter; Pirri and Monserrato are the cheap no-beach option, well connected and with zero tourist charm.

ComunidadCommunity

It's a city of roughly 150,000 (about 400,000 counting the metro area): you meet people fast, but almost all of them local. The international nomad community is small and seasonal — it swells in summer and evaporates by November — so don't count on a weekly nomad meetup the way you would in Lisbon or Barcelona. What you do get: a big university with Erasmus students (a steady flow of young foreigners, some Spanish-speaking) and a real social life built around sport — kitesurfing and windsurfing at Poetto, climbing, hiking, padel — which is the fastest way in. Daily life runs in Italian; tourism workers manage in English, but public offices, landlords and your neighbors don't. If you speak Spanish, Italian comes quickly, and the effort shows: people treat you differently when you at least try.

Warning number one is seasonality: between June and September many landlords flip their flats to tourist rentals, so long-term supply dries up and prices spike. Hunt in winter, sign before May, and be wary of the "contratto transitorio" (temporary, 1–18 months) they'll offer you in summer at an inflated price. Second: without a codice fiscale you barely exist — you need it for a lease, a bank account, sometimes even a phone contract; it's free at the Agenzia delle Entrate, but it takes an appointment and patience. Third: in August the city empties out, many businesses close for two or three weeks, and with the scirocco wind it pushes past 35 °C; winter is mild, but plenty of flats have bad or expensive heating and the damp is noticeable. Fourth: it's an island — in winter cheap direct flights to Europe thin out a lot and you leave via Rome, Milan or the ferry, so budget for that if you travel often. Safety: Cagliari is calm; at worst pickpocketing in Marina, around the port and at Poetto after dark. And if you're non-EU, remember Schengen's 90/180 rule: Italy has had a digital nomad visa since 2024, but it demands a highly-qualified profile, proven income, and processing varies a lot by consulate — confirm with yours before you count on it.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
