Brighton

Aprox. 139,001 habitantesApprox. 139,001 people

Brighton is England's most easygoing seaside city, on the south coast, under an hour by train from London. A Victorian resort turned the country's alternative capital, it mixes a pebble beach, a classic funfair pier, King George IV's extravagant oriental palace, and a maze of lanes packed with independent shops, cafés, and antique dealers. It's famous for its bohemian, creative, and openly LGBTQ+ atmosphere, home to one of the UK's largest gay communities. Studenty, music-loving, and liberal, Brighton is Londoners' favorite beach escape and a city with a huge personality of its own.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Brighton? How much do you need per month in Brighton?

Brighton works for you if you earn in pounds, dollars or strong euros and you want Europe with a beach, a genuine creative scene and London an hour away by train: there's a real digital community, you can walk almost everywhere, and it's one of the most open cities in the UK. It doesn't work if you came to stretch your budget: it's expensive (some of the highest rents outside London), winter is grey and in December it's dark by around 4pm, and signing a lease without UK credit history is a headache. Budget ≈US$1,800 a month living lean (room in a shared house, cooking at home) and ≈US$3,300 for your own flat without counting every pound. Everything here is paid in pounds: these figures are converted at ≈US$1.30 to the £, so if the exchange rate moves, your budget moves with it.

Paquete de internet ≈US$40-55/mes. Good, but it depends on the exact address, not the city. Virgin Media cable covers much of Brighton and Hove with plans from 100 Mbps up to ≈1 Gbps, and full fibre (FTTP) is arriving neighbourhood by neighbourhood; in plenty of Victorian conversions in the centre you still land on VDSL at ≈50-70 Mbps — fine for video calls, not for uploading heavy video every day. Home broadband runs ≈US$40-55/month. No power cuts and no censorship: electricity and internet are stable year-round. Mobile 4G/5G is solid citywide on EE, Vodafone, Three and O2; the main weak spot is indoors in old thick-walled buildings. One practical trap: most broadband contracts are 12-24 months, so for a short stay you're better off with 5G home broadband, a flat with internet included, or a rolling no-contract plan. Before signing a lease, get the postcode and check on a comparison site what speed actually reaches THAT address — in Brighton the gap between neighbouring streets is real.

CoworkingCoworking

Escritorio flexible ≈US$230-320/mes, oficina privada bastante más; pase de día ≈US$25-32. Strong for a city this size: Brighton has been a UK digital and creative hub for years (agencies, design, product), so the coworking scene is mature rather than improvised. The two names that always come up are PLATF9RM, the big local operator based in the old Hove Town Hall, and The Skiff, one of the oldest coworkings in the country and very tech-community-driven. There are also large flexible-office operators around the train station, plus creative studios renting out spare desks. As anywhere, spaces open and close locations: confirm the address and current price before you count on one. A hot desk runs ≈US$230-320/month, private offices considerably more; day passes ≈US$25-32. There's no shortage of cafés with wifi, but they're laptop-unfriendly at weekday lunchtime and all weekend — they fill with day-trippers and you'll get looks for holding a table for two hours.

North Laine is the bohemian centre: independent shops, cafés, everything on foot — and also the noisiest, with the smallest and priciest flats. Kemptown, to the east, is the city's LGBTQ+ heart, Georgian terraces near the sea, a bit cheaper and full of neighbourhood life; the St James's Street stretch is fun but messy at night. Hove (Brunswick, Church Road, Poets' Corner) is where people move once they're tired of the noise: quieter, more square metres for your money, the beach just as close, and the best value you'll find in an expensive city. Hanover is the hillside grid of terraced houses east of the centre, full of young creatives, good pubs and shared houses — cheap by Brighton standards, but you'll be climbing hills every day. If you want more green and a bit more space, look north at Preston Park or Fiveways: a couple of bus stops from the centre and, in Preston Park's case, one train stop from the main station.

ComunidadCommunity

Easy, if you speak English. Brighton is sociable and un-stiff by British standards: there are tech, design and product meetups most weeks, running clubs, sea-swimming groups (yes, in winter too) and board-game nights in pubs. The pub is the social operating system — almost everything starts with "fancy a drink?", and if you don't drink it still works, it just takes a little more effort. The Spanish-speaking community exists but is small and scattered; what there is plenty of are English-language schools, so in summer the city fills with Spanish, Italian and Latin American students and groups form around that. Day-to-day life is 100% in English, no exceptions. Being a university town and very queer-friendly, breaking into new circles is noticeably easier than in most UK cities — though a lot of people leave after a few years, so friendship groups churn.

The hardest part is renting. A normal tenancy means referencing, proof of income (agencies typically want annual income of ≈30x the monthly rent), a deposit capped at 5 weeks and, with no UK credit history, a UK guarantor or several months' rent upfront. Careful here: English rental law was reformed recently (the Renters' Rights Act) and it changes fundamentals — fixed terms, notice periods, how much rent can be demanded in advance — so ask the agency how it's being applied TODAY rather than trusting older guides. Budget for council tax: Brighton & Hove's bands are high, it's a bill separate from rent, and there's a 25% single-person discount, but you have to claim it. The weather isn't Mediterranean despite the beach (which is pebbles, by the way): October to March is grey and windy, and in December it's dark by around 4pm — the seasonal slump is real. The housing stock is Victorian and badly insulated: damp and mould are common complaints and heating bites in winter, so ask for the EPC rating before signing. Summer weekends bring day-trippers and stag parties into the centre; avoid renting near West Street or the seafront if you're a light sleeper, and take the seagulls seriously — they scream before dawn and will take food out of your hand. The city is safe overall; what you get is pickpocketing and a rough edge along the seafront on weekend nights. Forget a car: parking is expensive and resident permits are rationed by zone. And the legal bit: the UK has no digital nomad visa. Visitor entry does allow remote work for an overseas employer, but it can't be the main purpose of your trip and you can't take on UK work; depending on your passport you now need either an ETA (electronic travel authorisation, a few pounds) or a visitor visa, and long repeated stays invite questions at the border. Check the current rules on GOV.UK before committing to a long lease.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
