Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland, an industrial port city that reinvented itself after hard decades. The Titanic was built here, and the shipyard district is now the Titanic Quarter with its landmark museum. From the era of the Troubles remain the political murals of Falls and Shankill and the peace walls, visited by black taxi. The center revolves around the Victorian City Hall and the Cathedral Quarter, with pubs, music and cobbled streets. It's an ideal base for the Giant's Causeway on the coast.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Belfast? How much do you need per month in Belfast?
Belfast works if you want a European base in an English-speaking country, with some of the best fibre coverage in the UK and a small but genuine tech scene (cybersecurity, fintech, enterprise software) — within two weeks you'll have met half the ecosystem. It doesn't work if you want sun, a rotating nomad crowd, or visa stability: the UK has no digital nomad visa, so you enter as a visitor capped at 6 months. It's far cheaper than London or Dublin, but it is not cheap next to southern Europe or Latin America, and the grey, damp winter is no joke.

Northern Ireland has one of the highest full-fibre (FTTP) coverage rates in the UK, and in the city almost any address can get gigabit via Openreach, Virgin Media or Fibrus. A 100–500 Mbps home plan runs ≈US$32–45/month (£25–35), with gigabit for a little more. Note: almost nothing is symmetric — upload sits well below download, so if you do heavy video calls or upload big files, ask about upload speed before you sign. Reliability is high and there are no scheduled power cuts. Mobile: solid 4G citywide, 5G in the centre and main areas; a SIM with generous data is ≈US$13–20/month (£10–15). The catch isn't speed, it's the contract: many providers want 18 or 24 months. Staying only a few months? Look for a flat with internet included or a rolling monthly plan (they exist, they just cost more).
CoworkingCoworking
Un escritorio flexible mensual va de ≈US$155 a US$290 (£120–225) y el día suelto ronda ≈US$18–30. The scene is small but serious, because Belfast has a real tech sector and plenty of people working remotely for London or Dublin. The anchor is Catalyst in the Titanic Quarter: more an innovation campus with company offices and a startup community than a sea of hot desks, but it's where things happen. In town, on Ormeau Avenue, there's Ormeau Baths, the name everyone mentions when startups come up — check before you arrive that it's still running a flexible-desk format, as it has changed hands and models. There are also serviced offices with flexible desks downtown, and the Innovation Factory in west Belfast, aimed more at small companies than at nomads. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$155–290 (£120–225); a day pass is around ≈US$18–30. Honestly: a lot of people here end up working from home or cafés, because decent wifi is everywhere and there are fewer coworking options than in a typical nomad city. And don't expect the Lisbon or Medellín vibe — your desk neighbours are locals with local jobs, not people passing through.
Botanic / Queen's Quarter is where almost every newcomer lands: next to the university, everything walkable, cafés, the botanic gardens, and the biggest rental supply in the city — the trade-off is that it's very student-heavy and noisy midweek. Ormeau Road / Ballynafeigh is the favourite of thirty-somethings who are done with students: good food, cafés, Ormeau Park next door, 20–25 minutes' walk to the centre. Stranmillis and the Lisburn Road are the quiet, leafy side of south Belfast — a bit pricier and more residential, ideal if you work from home and hate noise. Titanic Quarter has the newest apartments and sits beside Catalyst, but it feels empty at night with little within walking distance for dinner. The Cathedral Quarter and city centre put you on top of every bar: brilliant for the first two months, unbearable on Fridays if your window faces the street.
ComunidadCommunity
Daily life runs in English, full stop, and that's the big unlock: no language barrier, just the Belfast accent, which will throw you more than you expect in week one. People here are genuinely chatty — a stranger striking up conversation in the supermarket queue is normal, not weird. Social life happens in pubs, not apps; if you don't drink, still go, nobody will push you much. There are tech meetups with real frequency (dev, data, cybersecurity) and Farset Labs, the city's hackerspace, is a good way in. Queen's and Ulster University bring international students, so there is a Spanish-speaking community, though it's small and tied to the academic calendar. The honest part: because nomad turnover is low, you won't slot into an expat bubble — you integrate into a local circle, which takes longer but lasts longer. Locals have had the same friends since school and many vanish to family at weekends; the first couple of months can feel slow.
You enter as a visitor, six months maximum, and since 2025 almost everyone must apply online for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) beforehand — it was £16 after the April 2025 increase and covers multiple entries for about two years, but check the current price and rules in the official guidance, they change often. A very Belfast detail: if you arrive overland from Ireland there is no border control (Common Travel Area) and official guidance says you don't need an ETA in that case — you still have to meet UK entry requirements, and since you get neither an entry nor an exit stamp, proving your dates later is a headache. That Dublin trip does NOT reset your UK stay either. Several Latin American nationalities enter visa-free (Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Panama, among others) and others do need a visitor visa: check yours, don't assume. Visitor rules do allow working remotely for your employer based outside the UK as long as that isn't the main purpose of the trip, but a border officer may ask — know where you're staying and why you're here. Weather: it rains a lot, it's grey for most of the winter, and in December it's dark by around 4pm — the cold isn't brutal, but the damp and the lack of light knock people flat. Heating is expensive: much of the older housing runs on oil or electric heating and the winter bill stings, so always ask how a flat is heated before signing. The rental market is tight: expect a deposit (by law usually capped at one month's rent and required to sit in a protection scheme), references and proof of income; contracts are typically 6 or 12 months, and short-term furnished places are scarce and pricier. Ask explicitly whether "rates" (the local property tax) are included in the rent — in many lets the landlord pays them, but get it in writing. Safety: Belfast is safe for ordinary crime by UK standards, but the sectarian legacy is still live in specific parts of west and north Belfast, with peace walls and flags. In July, marching season — especially the night of the 11th and the parades on the 12th — makes some areas tense and shuts half the city down. Friendly advice: don't wander around in a Celtic or Rangers shirt, and hold off on politics and religion until you can read the room. One last thing: everything here is paid in pounds; the dollar figures use ≈US$1.28 per pound, so if the exchange rate moves, your budget moves with it.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
