Its main avenue, the Cours Mirabeau, sets the tone: cafés under the trees, 17th-century mansions and students from Aix-Marseille University. The old town is a maze of lanes, market squares and photogenic ochre façades. To the east rises Montagne Sainte-Victoire, which Cézanne painted dozens of times. It's pricey but very walkable, with a relaxed southern-French feel.
