Lyon is France's third city and, to many, its gastronomic capital. It sits at the confluence of two rivers, the Rhône and the Saône, and carries two thousand years of history: it was Roman Lugdunum, capital of the Gauls. Its Renaissance old town, Vieux Lyon, is one of Europe's finest, with its 'traboules,' secret passages cutting through buildings that silk weavers once used to move fabric. Above the city rises the hill of Fourvière with its basilica, and across it the Croix-Rousse, the district of the old 'canuts' (silk workers). You eat wonderfully in its 'bouchons,' the traditional taverns, and every December the Festival of Lights turns the city into a spectacle.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Lyon? How much do you need per month in Lyon?

Lyon works if you want genuinely good European quality of life — excellent fibre, transport that actually works, serious food, TGV to Paris in about 2h, plus the Alps, Geneva and Provence nearby — without Paris prices. It doesn't work if you're chasing cost arbitrage: it's expensive by nomad standards, daily life happens in French, and landing a normal lease is a bureaucratic slog without French payslips. It's a base for someone staying months and settling in, not for a four-week hop.

Aquí no vas a sufrir. You won't suffer here. Lyon is almost fully fibred: plans are advertised in multiple gigabits and in practice you get hundreds of real Mbps over wifi and close to a gig on cable, for roughly US$28-50 a month (≈€25-45) depending on provider and promo. Mobile 4G/5G is solid across the city and in the metro, and French data plans are among the cheapest in Western Europe. No blackouts, no recurring outages. The pain is administrative: signing up for fibre in your own name usually requires a French bank account (or at least a SEPA IBAN) and proof of address, and installation can take weeks — so for a stay of a few months look for a furnished flat with internet already included and skip the paperwork.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is real but more corporate and startup-flavoured than backpacker-nomad: local company folks, French freelancers and consultants, not much "met three nomads by the coffee machine" energy. A hot-desk monthly runs about US$170-280 (≈€150-250) depending on the site and area; a dedicated desk goes well above that. La Cordée started in Lyon and has several locations around town, and big corporate-tower options cluster around Part-Dieu. Café-coworking spots where you pay by the hour or day also exist. On a tight budget most people work from home and use cafés — French café wifi is usually decent and a specialty coffee runs ≈US$4 (≈€3.50-4.50) — but staff don't expect you to camp at a table for four hours, and plugs are scarce in many places.

Croix-Rousse (1st and 4th districts): the hill of the old silk workshops — village feel, markets, a creative crowd and a lot of stairs. The favourite of people who stay long. Presqu'île (1st and 2nd): the strip of land between the Rhône and the Saône, everything on foot, the priciest option and the noisiest on weekends. La Guillotière and Jean Macé (7th): multicultural, young, student-heavy, the most reasonable rent near the centre with good metro links; a few blocks feel rougher at night. Villeurbanne (Gratte-Ciel and Charpennes): a separate town glued to Lyon, direct metro, cheaper, full of student life. Confluence (2nd) is modern and quiet by the water, but it feels a bit sterile and far from any street buzz.

ComunidadCommunity

Lyon has a huge student population plus plenty of exchange students and international-company workers, so meeting other foreigners is easy: language exchanges, expat groups and student events happen most weeks — though in July and August the city empties out and all of that slows down. Getting into French circles is slower: friendship here cooks slowly, and in French. English gets you through tourist situations and international offices, but daily life (landlord, doctor, admin, market) runs in French, and without at least a basic level you'll feel isolated by month three. There is a Spanish-speaking community, mostly Spanish and Latin American students, but it's far smaller than in Madrid or Barcelona: expect to find it, not to live inside it.

The hard part isn't the price, it's landing a flat. The French rental market wants a dossier showing income around three times the rent and very often a French guarantor, which a nomad almost never has — so most people end up in short-stay furnished places or a colocation, paying a noticeable premium over a classic lease. Budget for that gap. Lyon and Villeurbanne have had legal rent caps for a few years now, but tourist-furnished rentals slip around the edges, so the price quoted to you isn't what the neighbour on a three-year lease pays. The figures here are built in euros and the dollar equivalent is indicative only: the exchange rate moves, check it before you commit. If you're not from the EU, France has no digital nomad visa: either you use the 90-days-in-180 Schengen allowance — don't stretch it, exits are logged — or you apply for a long-stay "visiteur" visa, which requires proof of income and insurance and does not let you work for clients in France; confirm the details with the consulate before you count on it. Going past ~183 days can make you a French tax resident, which is not a small thing. On weather: winter is grey, damp and long, and summer brings serious heatwaves in a valley full of old buildings with no air conditioning, so ask about insulation and which way the flat faces before signing; winter also brings poor air-quality episodes from the valley's thermal inversion. Safety-wise Lyon is generally calm: the real risk is pickpocketing on the metro, around Part-Dieu station and parts of La Guillotière at night. And transport strikes are a thing: when they hit, they hit.
