Zagreb

Aprox. 698,966 habitantesApprox. 698,966 people

Zagreb is the capital of Croatia and, unlike the Dalmatian coast, an inland, Central European city with an Austro-Hungarian feel. It splits into the medieval Upper Town (Gornji Grad) on the hill and the 19th-century Lower Town (Donji Grad) of orderly blocks, parks and cafés. It's compact, very walkable, with an almost religious terrace-café culture. Cheaper and calmer than Western European capitals, it works brilliantly as a base and as a stop on the way to the Adriatic.

Mejor épocaBest time

Spring and early autumn are ideal. December is special for Advent in Zagreb, one of Europe's best Christmas markets; summer is warm and a bit emptier.

EntradaEntry

Croatia is in the Schengen area and uses the euro. Many nationalities enter visa-free for short stays.

PresupuestoBudget

Cheaper than Vienna or Munich. A nomad lives comfortably on around $1,200-1,800/month; coffee and eating out are reasonable.

The center is walkable; there's a good tram network and the world's shortest funicular links the two towns. A small nomad community with coworking spaces.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Zagreb? How much do you need per month in Zagreb?

Zagreb works if you want a real, functional European city — trams everywhere, solid fiber, cafés you can actually work from — at a cost clearly below Western Europe, and a long grey winter doesn't scare you. It doesn't work if you want a big nomad scene: in Croatia the nomads head for the coast (Split, Zadar), and Zagreb stays a quiet base for people who came to live, not to post. And it's no longer the bargain it was: since the euro (January 2023) and the short-term rental boom, central rents have climbed hard.

Internet y señalInternet & signal

Bien. Good. Fiber reaches most of the city, with typical plans of 100 to 1,000 Mbps for ≈US$30–40 a month, and it's stable — no blackouts or chronic outages to plan around, no censorship, no VPN needed. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is solid citywide with the big carriers (Hrvatski Telekom, A1, Telemach). The weak spot isn't speed, it's paperwork: home lines usually come with a 12–24 month contract, so for a short furnished stay you want internet already included and in the landlord's name. And don't bet a serious video call on café wifi — it exists, but it's hit or miss.

CoworkingCoworking

Small but serious scene, and cheap by European standards: a flex desk runs ≈US$130–200 a month, a private office noticeably more. Most spaces sit in Donji grad or in the office belt just south of the centre. Impact Hub Zagreb and HUB385 are the names that have been around the local tech scene for years, but coworkings open and close — confirm they're still operating and check current pricing before you count on one. Always ask for a trial day: the vibe swings a lot between a room full of Croatian startup teams and a room of scattered freelancers. There's also a very real free coworking: café culture. People here hold a table for hours on one espresso and nobody pushes you out.

Dónde vive la gente nómadaWhere nomads actually live

Donji grad (centro). Donji grad (Lower Town). The 19th-century grid with the squares, the trams, and nearly every café and coworking. Where most nomads land: you can walk everything. Also the priciest, and full of old, poorly insulated buildings. Trešnjevka. West of the centre, residential and genuinely local, with its own market and a direct tram. Best price-to-location ratio, and where people move once the centre wears them out. Maksimir. East side, green and quiet, next to the city's big park; good if you run, have a dog, or care about sleeping well. Novi Zagreb. Across the Sava river, roomy socialist blocks with good tram links. Considerably cheaper and considerably uglier; works if budget rules and you don't mind a 15–20 minute ride into town.

ComunidadCommunity

Modest and low-key. Don't expect the Lisbon or Medellín circus: Croatia's nomad crowd clusters on the coast and mostly in summer, so in Zagreb you'll meet exchange students, tech expats and Croatians long before you meet Instagram nomads. The upside: English is widely spoken by under-40s and daily life is easy. Croatian is hard and you don't need it to live here, though four words open doors. There's a Spanish-speaking community, but a small one. What actually works for meeting people: language exchanges, the city's expat Facebook groups, and your coworking itself. Getting close to Croatian friends takes longer — social circles go back to school — but the sit-for-hours café culture works in your favour.

Five things a friend would tell you. Winter is hard on the mood: grey, damp, and prone to temperature inversions that leave the city under fog and dirty air for days; if sunlight keeps you going, visit in winter or spring and test it before signing for a year. Heating: the pretty old flats downtown are freezing, and the bill from December to February can double your utilities; ask what kind of heating the apartment has (city district heating, its own gas boiler, electric) before you rent. Earthquakes still show: the big one hit Zagreb on 22 March 2020, followed by the Petrinja quake that December, which was felt here too; the historic centre was damaged and buildings still sit under scaffolding with half-finished repairs, so check the building's actual condition, not the listing photo. Leases: plenty of landlords rent on a handshake to avoid declaring income. If you plan to apply for Croatia's digital nomad permit (it has existed since 2021, the income bar is high and updated yearly, and the duration rules have changed — verify the current figure and term before you count on it) you need a registered lease and address: agree on that BEFORE you move in, nobody wants to afterwards. Schengen: Croatia joined in January 2023, so your tourist days eat into the 90/180 allowance for the whole Schengen area. Also, in August half the city leaves for the coast and Zagreb goes quiet.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
