It's an ancient city tied to two things: its vast salt lake (Yuncheng's Salt Lake), one of China's oldest salt-production centers, worked for millennia; and its link to Guan Yu, the Three Kingdoms general deified as the god of loyalty and war, born in this region. Here stands the great Xiezhou Guandi Temple, the largest dedicated to him.
