Cantón

Aprox. 11,071,424 habitantesApprox. 11,071,424 people

Guangzhou (Canton) is the great capital of southern China, on the banks of the Pearl River (Zhujiang) and barely over an hour by train from Hong Kong. It's the home of the Cantonese language and one of the country's finest cuisines: dim sum and the ritual of yum cha, morning tea, were born here. For centuries it was the single port through which China traded with the West, and it remains an industrial powerhouse and host of the Canton Fair. Hot, humid and subtropical, it blends skyscrapers like the Canton Tower with old lanes and colonial-era houses.

Mejor épocaBest time

Autumn (October-December) is best: dry and mild. Spring is rainy and summer (June-September) is very hot, humid and prone to typhoons.

PresupuestoBudget

Cheaper than Hong Kong or Shanghai. Dim sum is great value; a moderate traveler can get by on USD 900-1,500/month.

EntradaEntry

China requires a visa for most nationalities, but Guangzhou is covered by the visa-free transit policy (up to 240h for many passports). Check current rules before flying.

The metro is huge, clean and cheap, with English signage. You'll need WeChat or Alipay to pay for almost everything; cash is barely used.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Cantón?How much do you need per month in Cantón?

Guangzhou works as a base if your work is async or if you make your living trading with China: first-world infrastructure, a flawless metro, unbelievable Cantonese food, and a low cost of living for what you get. It doesn't work if you lean on Google, WhatsApp, or Instagram all day, or if you want a Spanish-speaking nomad scene — the typical foreigner here is a buyer, a sourcing agent, or an English teacher, not a freelancer with a laptop. And from May to October the humid heat is a tax you pay every single day.

Zoom y Teams a veces pasan sin VPN y a veces no; no le apuestes una llamada importante, ten siempre un plan B.Fiber is fast and cheap: hundreds of Mbps for ≈US$15–25 a month, rock solid, and 5G is excellent citywide, including inside the metro. No outages. Speed isn't the problem — the Great Firewall is: Google (Gmail, Drive, Meet), WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube are blocked, so you'll be living on a VPN. VPNs work, but they degrade for stretches (especially around politically sensitive dates) and add latency: a video call to Europe or the Americas can stutter even on a very fast line. Buy and test your VPN BEFORE you arrive — their websites are blocked from here too. Zoom and Teams sometimes get through without a VPN and sometimes don't; never bet an important call on it, always have a plan B.

CoworkingCoworking

There's a real coworking scene, but it's built for Chinese startups and corporate teams, not passing nomads: expect private offices and contracts more than communal tables. The big operators (including WeWork's China business) have locations around Tianhe and the business district, and there are several local chains; a monthly hot desk runs ≈US$120–280 — but confirm the location is still open before you show up, they turn over fast. Plenty of people just work from cafés: Dongshankou and Yongqingfang are full of specialty coffee shops with decent wifi, though a free outlet and a four-hour sit aren't guaranteed. Almost everything — tours, prices, contracts — happens over WeChat, not email.

Tianhe / Zhujiang New Town is the CBD: new towers, metro everywhere, the priciest and the easiest place to live if you don't speak Chinese. Dongshankou, in Yuexiu, is leafy old Guangzhou — early-1900s villas, cafés, walkable streets — the best mix of price and character. Haizhu, especially Chigang and the Pazhou area, is cheaper and sits next to the Canton Fair complex, ideal if you're here on business. Liwan / Enning Lu is the genuinely Cantonese side of the city: street food, old houses, more noise. If you want cheap rent and don't mind 40–60 minutes on the metro, look at Panyu or Baiyun.

ComunidadCommunity

This is not Medellín or Bangkok — you won't bump into nomads. There are Spanish speakers: Mexican, Colombian, and Argentine buyers, plus sourcing agents who've been here for years, but they orbit trade and the Canton Fair, not coworking spaces; the city also has long-established African and Middle Eastern trading communities, mostly around the Xiaobei and Sanyuanli areas. Daily life runs in Mandarin (and Cantonese among locals); English gets you through the CBD and business settings, not much further. Everything happens on WeChat — without it you socially don't exist; that's where the expat, sports, and language-exchange groups live. Meetup and Facebook need a VPN. Making friends takes longer than in a nomad hub, but pick up some Mandarin and the city opens fast.

The heat comes first: May to October is humid, sticky, and relentless, and in peak season (roughly June to October) typhoons come up from the south. Second, cash barely exists — you need Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card linked, and you should set that up and test it before you land; you'll also need a Chinese phone number, because half the country (Didi, food apps, ticketing) asks for one. Third, if you rent an apartment (not a hotel) you must register your address at the neighborhood police station within 24 hours; it's routine paperwork, but don't skip it. Fourth, rentals typically want one month's deposit plus three months up front, an agency fee of half a month to a full month, and a one-year contract — short and flexible costs you. Fifth, visa rules move fast: China has visa-free entry for a fair number of countries plus a multi-day visa-free transit through airports like Guangzhou's, but the list is updated every few months and doesn't cover every Spanish-speaking country, so check YOUR passport with the consulate before booking, and understand that working remotely on a tourist entry is a grey zone — don't advertise it. The upside: the city is extremely safe at night — the real risk here is bureaucratic and logistical, not personal safety.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
