Xi’an
Aprox. 6,501,190 habitantesApprox. 6,501,190 people
Xi'an was China's capital under several dynasties (it was the Tang-era Chang'an) and the starting point of the Silk Road, so it carries more history than almost any other city in the country. It sits in Shaanxi province, on the Wei River plain of north-central China. Its old town is still ringed by a complete Ming-era wall you can walk or cycle. It's world-famous for the Terracotta Army, but also for its wheat-based cuisine and a Muslim Quarter with centuries of Hui history.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Xi’an?How much do you need per month in Xi’an?
Xi'an is one of the cheapest bases you'll find in a city of 13 million: incredible food for two or three dollars, a modern metro, and rent well below Shanghai or Beijing. It works if you're genuinely interested in China, willing to learn some Mandarin, and your work doesn't depend on Google, WhatsApp, or Instagram — all of which are blocked, so you'll live behind a VPN that sometimes breaks. It doesn't work if you want a soft English-language landing, a big nomad community, or simple paperwork: almost nobody speaks English here, there's no digital nomad visa, and registering your address at the police station is a real requirement.

The infrastructure is excellent and cheap: home fiber in the hundreds of megabits for very little, and 5G coverage that works even inside the metro. Speed isn't the problem — the Great Firewall is. Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, and much of your work stack are blocked. You live on a VPN (budget ≈US$5-12/month), which is a legal grey area, slows down or drops around politically sensitive dates, and occasionally kills your video call on the exact day of the big meeting. If your job runs on Google Workspace, set up real redundancy — a backup VPN, roaming on your foreign SIM — before you move, not after.
CoworkingCoworking
There is a coworking scene, but it's built for local Chinese startups, not foreign nomads: spaces inside the office towers of Gaoxin (the tech district) and a few in Qujiang, with flexible desk memberships generally in the ≈US$90-170 range depending on the space. There's no international brand you can confidently book from abroad, so the normal move is to tour two or three once you land and negotiate on the spot. Don't expect the social vibe of Medellín or Chiang Mai — people work quietly and in Mandarin, and the space's website probably doesn't exist in English. In practice most people end up working from home or from cafés; there's a decent specialty coffee scene in Xiaozhai and Qujiang with outlets and wifi, though public wifi almost always wants a Chinese phone number to sign up.
Gaoxin (the high-tech zone, southwest) is where most working foreigners live: new towers, the best fiber, supermarkets with imported goods, and the most international feel in the city. Qujiang, southeast near the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, is greener, quieter and more residential, with modern apartments and good value. Xiaozhai is the university and shopping hub: cheap, young, food everywhere, and the best bet if you want language exchange — though the buildings are noticeably older. Inside the city walls near the Drum Tower and Bell Tower is the prettiest and the most touristy: central and full of character, but noisy, with old buildings and very uneven housing quality.
ComunidadCommunity
The foreign community is small and orbits the universities: international students, English teachers, a few engineers. There's essentially no Spanish-speaking community — if you need Spanish in your daily life, this isn't your city. Meeting people happens on WeChat: the groups are the entire social life, and without the app you're outside everything, since Meetup and Facebook don't work here. Language exchanges and the bar nights around Xiaozhai are the easiest way in. The day-to-day language is Mandarin with a Shaanxi accent; outside hotels and universities English is scarce, so you'll live with your phone translator open for the first few months.
Three things will hit you before the price does. One: payments. Everything runs on WeChat Pay or Alipay, cash is barely used, and while you can now link a foreign card, it sometimes fails at the worst moment — arrive with the apps set up and tested from home. Two: registration. You must register your address at the local police station within days of arriving (in cities the standard window is 24 hours); hotels do it for you, a private landlord usually won't, and the fine lands on you. On top of that, many budget hotels don't accept foreigners and Airbnb stopped operating listings inside China, so booking short stays is trickier than you'd expect. Three: air and weather. Xi'an sits in the Guanzhong basin, and in winter the smog stalls for weeks, with central heating season running mid-November to mid-March; summer is a genuine furnace, spiking to 38-40 °C in July and August. And be careful with your immigration status: China has no digital nomad visa, visa-free entry rules have changed a lot in the last two years and depend on your passport, and working remotely on a tourist visa is a grey area. Confirm your specific case with the consulate before you book the flight. Leases are typically one year on the standard "one month deposit, three months upfront" structure, plus an agent fee of half to a full month's rent.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.

Streets of food stalls where roujiamo (meat-stuffed flatbread) and noodles are born; chaotic and buzzing at night.
