It was a thriving textile and silk center and today mixes industry with a pleasant lakeside setting. Its main tourist draw is the enormous Lingshan bronze Buddha and the Lake Tai scenery. It sits in the Yangtze Delta, half an hour by high-speed train from Suzhou and little more from Shanghai. Mandarin and the local Wu dialect are spoken.
