It sits on the Rhine, across from Mainz and very close to Frankfurt, at the gateway to the Rheingau wine region. Its fame comes from the thermal waters that have surfaced here since Roman times, which made it a fashionable destination for European aristocracy in the 19th century. As a result it keeps a stately spa-town architecture, with its grand Kurhaus and historic villas.
