It's famous across China for its entrepreneurial culture: the so-called "Wenzhou model" of small private factories and trade —shoes, lighters, eyeglasses, buttons— and for a huge diaspora that has built businesses all over Europe, especially in Italy and France. Locals speak their own Wu dialect, notoriously hard for other Chinese to understand. Ringed by mountains and sea, it sits near one of the country's great landscapes, the Yandang Mountains.
