It's a city of mining and industrial roots —zinc, lead, and titanium metallurgy— with long, bitterly cold winters and short, warm summers. Its real draw isn't famous monuments but its position: it's the gateway to the Kazakh Altai of forests, lakes, and rivers, one of the least touristy corners of Central Asia.
