Almaty

Aprox. 2,000,900 habitantesApprox. 2,000,900 people

Almaty was Kazakhstan's capital until 1997 and remains its largest city and cultural heart. It spreads across a plain at the foot of the Trans-Ili Alatau, a spur of the Tian Shan whose snowy peaks are visible from almost any street. Laid out on a grid with tree-lined avenues and irrigation channels (aryks), it blends Soviet architecture, bazaars, and a growing café and mountaineering scene. Within an hour you can be skating at Medeu or skiing at Shymbulak.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Almaty? How much do you need per month in Almaty?

Almaty works if you want an actual big city, with mountains half an hour away, great food and low prices for what you get — and you're not put off by daily life happening in Russian. Kill the myth first: it's not the cheapest city in Central Asia (Bishkek and Tashkent are), it's the most expensive in the region — but it's also the one that gives you the most city for your money: fast, dirt-cheap fiber, specialty coffee and a real tech scene. It doesn't work if you need a large English-speaking nomad crowd, if clean air matters to you (winter smog is serious), or if you depend on a connection that never drops: the government has already cut internet nationwide during a political crisis.

Home fiber is the best value in Central Asia: expect roughly ≈100-200 Mbps (faster plans exist) for ≈US$10-16 a month, stable, with good latency to Europe and bad latency to the Americas — 250 ms and up on calls to Mexico or Chile, purely from distance. 4G covers the city well and is cheap; 5G exists in parts of Almaty, not everywhere, so don't assume it in your apartment. The real issue isn't speed, it's politics: in January 2022, during the unrest, Kazakhstan cut internet nationwide and the country was effectively offline for days, and there are occasional blocks and throttling of sites and of some VPN services. If your work can't survive a day down, have a plan B: a second SIM on another carrier, plus international roaming as a lifeline.

CoworkingCoworking

There's a genuine coworking scene tied to the Kazakh tech ecosystem, but it isn't huge: you'll find solid spaces downtown and in the office towers along Al-Farabi Avenue, with a hot desk in the ≈US$80-160 a month range and day passes if you want to try first. I won't name places from memory — they open, move and close fast, and a wrong name costs you a morning — so walk the Golden Square and ask in local Telegram groups, which is how everything moves here. What I can promise is that Almaty's specialty coffee culture is the real deal: dozens of good cafés where working on a laptop is normal, with decent wifi and outlets. Plenty of nomads skip the membership and just rotate between cafés.

The Golden Square (Zolotoy Kvadrat), the central downtown grid between streets like Zheltoksan, Kabanbay Batyr and Panfilov, is where most foreigners end up: walkable, packed with cafés, bars and galleries, everything on foot. Samal (Samal-1, 2 and 3), a greener microdistrict further uphill near Republic Square, is the classic pick if you want quiet and mountain views. The Esentai / Nurly Tau area on Al-Farabi is the modern, pricier side: new towers, a luxury mall, move-in-ready apartments — but you'll lean on taxis. To stretch your budget, microdistricts like Koktem and Orbita offer spacious Soviet-era apartments well served by buses, for much less (Orbita is well out west: cheap, but far). Two Almaty rules: the higher up you live (south, toward the mountains), the pricier it gets and the cleaner the air; and the metro is a single short line, so the city actually moves by bus and Yandex Go, not by metro.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people takes more effort than in Medellín or Bangkok, but it's no desert. Since 2022 a large wave of Russian "relocants" arrived, many of them in tech, and they brought meetups, startup events and very active Telegram groups — Telegram, not Facebook or Meetup, is where the community actually lives here. Spanish-speaking community: essentially nonexistent, don't count on it. Daily life happens in Russian (Kazakh is increasingly used officially and there's a real push to normalize it, but in Almaty Russian gets you through everything). English is spoken by younger people, the tech crowd and downtown café staff; beyond that, no. Learn the Cyrillic alphabet in your first week — seriously, it changes the city for you. Kazakhs are genuinely hospitable, but friendship builds slowly and almost always around a table.

Winter smog is the number one warning and almost nobody gives it to you: Almaty sits in a windless bowl at the foot of the mountains and from November to March temperature inversions make the air genuinely bad — if you have asthma or kids, think twice, live as far uphill as you can, and bring an air purifier. Second: this is an active seismic zone, quakes are felt (several in 2024 sent people into the street), and it's worth knowing what to do. Third, money: the tenge has devalued in steps, inflation bit hard, and rents jumped when thousands of Russians arrived in 2022; every figure above is an order of magnitude, not a locked budget — check Krisha.kz when you land. Fourth, payments: nearly everything here is paid by Kaspi QR, and to open Kaspi you need an IIN (local ID number) and usually a Kazakh phone number; the rules for foreigners have shifted more than once, so go to the public service center (TsON) as soon as you arrive and carry cash meanwhile. Fifth, the SIM: Kazakhstan requires registering your phone's IMEI or the network blocks it within weeks — ask at the carrier shop when you buy the SIM. Sixth, immigration: several passports (EU, US, UK and some Latin American ones) enter visa-free for around 30 days per entry, with a cap on total stay within a 180-day window, and a remote-worker visa route exists; which nationalities get visa-free entry and for how long changes often, so check your own case with the consulate before booking flights, and check whether you must register with migration for a long stay. And when renting: budget an agency fee (usually half a month to a full month) plus deposit, many deals close in cash on an informal contract, so never hand over money without seeing the apartment.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
