Uppsala

Aprox. 149,245 habitantesApprox. 149,245 people

Uppsala is Sweden's fourth city and its great university town, less than an hour north of Stockholm. It's home to Uppsala University, the oldest in Scandinavia (founded 1477), and its Gothic cathedral is the tallest in the Nordic countries. The Fyris River splits the centre in two, with the old town, the pink castle on the hill and the gardens on one side, and student life on the other. A few kilometres away lies Gamla Uppsala, old pagan Uppsala, with its great Viking-age burial mounds. It's a cultured, cycling, very walkable city, with sharp seasons and Nordic light.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Uppsala? How much do you need per month in Uppsala?

It's a good fit if you earn in dollars or euros and enjoy university-town life (bikes, forest, cafés, a young crowd). It's a bad fit if you're on a southern-Europe budget, if you need housing sorted fast — finding a flat is the genuinely hard part here — or if dark winters drain you: around the December solstice usable daylight runs roughly 9am to 3pm.

Internet is not a problem here — it's among the best anywhere. Fiber reaches most apartment buildings and the normal deal is 250/250 Mbps or symmetric gigabit for ≈US$30–45 a month; in many buildings the provider comes bundled with the property's contract and you just pick a plan or an operator from an open network. Video calls don't drop and blackouts are essentially not a thing: the Swedish grid is stable year-round, snow included. Mobile 4G/5G is excellent across the city and generally holds up on the Stockholm train, with the usual short dropouts on any train line — don't schedule your most important call for the commute. The real catch is bureaucratic rather than technical: signing up for fiber or a contract mobile plan usually requires a Swedish personal number (personnummer) or a credit check. Without one you go prepaid and look for housing with internet already included — which, luckily, most sublets have.

CoworkingCoworking

There's a coworking scene, but it's small and skews startup/research rather than freelance-nomad: Uppsala runs on the university and the life-science/biotech sector, so much of it clusters around Uppsala Science Park and Uppsala Innovation Centre, aimed at companies and projects more than month-to-month hot desks. There are also flexible offices near the central station and in the business areas south of it. Budget ≈US$180–320 a month for a flex desk, more for a dedicated office, and expect prices to be quoted excluding VAT; most places will let you trial a day before committing. The realistic and very common alternative: the city public library (Stadsbiblioteket), open to everyone, free and well equipped, plus the university libraries and downtown cafés — nobody will kick you out in Sweden, but camping on a table for four hours isn't really the culture either. If you want a big, varied coworking community, that's in Stockholm, about 40 minutes away by train.

Centrum and along the Fyris river (Fyrisån): priciest and most practical — everything on foot, cafés, and the central station for hopping to Stockholm. Luthagen: the favorite of anyone working or studying at the university — quiet, leafy, a short bike ride from the center, expensive but not absurd. Kungsängen: the new-build area just south of the station, modern well-insulated flats, ideal if you'll commute to Stockholm often (fast SJ trains ≈40 min, the regional commuter train closer to 55), though it lacks neighborhood soul. Kåbo: the grand, expensive part next to the campus and the Botanical Garden — houses and total calm. Farther out, Flogsta is classic student territory (the cheapest rooms you'll find, 15–20 minutes by bike from the center), and areas like Eriksberg are ordinary residential Uppsala: cheaper, greener, and dependent on the bus or the bike. One general rule: this is a flat, bike-mad city, so "far" here is a 20-minute ride, not an ordeal.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easy at the surface level and slow underneath — the standard Swedish pattern. English is universal: you can live here for years without Swedish and nobody will hold it against you day to day, though Swedish opens up jobs and paperwork. The city is genuinely international because of the university and SLU — thousands of exchange students and foreign researchers, so there are always newcomers in your exact situation. One important catch: a big share of social life runs through the nations, the centuries-old student clubs with their own bars, dinners and parties, and you generally need to be an enrolled student to join. If you're not, your routes are tech and startup meetups around the Science Park, sports and hiking groups, choirs (Uppsala is genuinely a choir town), and expat groups on Facebook and Meetup. There is a Spanish-speaking community, mostly Latin American and university-linked, but it's small; the big one is in Stockholm. And learn the word fika: an afternoon coffee with someone is the most real social door you'll get. Be honest with yourself about one thing — this is not a digital-nomad hub. You'll meet students and researchers, not people on their third country of the year.

The number one problem isn't price, it's finding somewhere to live. First-hand contracts are allocated through municipal waiting queues where people have been standing for years, so as a newcomer you'll almost certainly end up in andrahand (a sublet) via Blocket Bostad, Qasa, Samtrygg or similar: pricier, 6–12 month contracts, and scams are common — never wire a deposit before seeing the place and confirming the owner has written permission to sublet. Second hit, bureaucracy: without a personnummer (which normally requires a residence permit and an intended stay of at least a year) it's hard to open a bank account, get BankID or use Swish, and without BankID a lot of digital Sweden closes to you; as a Schengen tourist you get 90 days out of 180, and Sweden has no digital nomad visa. Then winter: November to February is dark, damp and cold, with snow and cold snaps around −10 °C, and foreigners routinely underestimate what months of that do to you. On safety, Uppsala is one of the calmest places you'll ever live — the honest nuance is that a couple of outer neighborhoods, Gottsunda among them, have appeared on the Swedish police's list of vulnerable areas; they're cheaper and most people there live perfectly normal lives, but that's the trade-off you're choosing. Two practical notes: rent almost always includes heating and water (electricity sometimes separate), and alcohol is sold only at Systembolaget and costs noticeably more than in southern Europe. And carry a card, not cash — almost nobody takes cash here. Last thing: every figure above is converted from Swedish kronor, so if the krona moves your dollar budget moves with it.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
