Estocolmo

Aprox. 1,515,017 habitantesApprox. 1,515,017 people

Stockholm floats on fourteen islands: water everywhere, an ochre medieval old town, impeccable design and an archipelago of 30,000 islands a ferry away. Elegant, green and orderly, with white nights in summer and very dark winters. Pricey, but with a quality of life and calm hard to match.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Estocolmo? How much do you need per month in Estocolmo?

Stockholm works if you earn in dollars or euros and you value everything simply working: first-world internet, flawless transit, safety, English everywhere and a real tech scene. It doesn't work if you're counting every dollar, or if you want beach and heat — it's expensive, and in December you get about six hours of daylight. The bottleneck isn't day-to-day spending, it's housing: finding a short-term apartment in Stockholm is a contact sport. One caveat on the numbers below: they're converted at roughly 10 kronor to the dollar, and the krona swings, so check the current rate before locking in a budget.

Not much to debate here: Sweden is one of the best places in the world to work online. Fiber is the urban standard and 250 Mbps to 1 Gbps symmetric is normal in an apartment, through providers like Telia, Bahnhof or Ownit. It's stable — power cuts and network outages are very rare, and there's no censorship or need for a VPN. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is excellent across the city, including the metro, and handles video calls without drama; a prepaid data SIM runs about ≈US$20-25 a month (Comviq, Tre, Telia). One practical catch: in a sublet the internet is usually included, you don't pick the provider and you can't order your own fiber — so if your work lives on the uplink, ask for a speed test before signing.

CoworkingCoworking

Mature, well-stocked scene — Stockholm is one of Europe's strongest startup hubs, so you get real coworking, not just generic desks. Epicenter (right downtown) and Norrsken House (on Birger Jarlsgatan, impact-focused) are the two names everyone mentions; local chains like United Spaces and Convendum run several locations too. A hot desk runs roughly ≈US$250-400 a month; a dedicated desk or private office costs noticeably more. Prices change often and most places want to show you around first, so confirm directly with them. Free and very Swedish alternative: public libraries and dozens of cafés with decent wifi — though in most cafés you'll get looks if you camp for five hours on one coffee.

Östermalm es precioso y caro; ahí viven pocos nómadas.Södermalm is the obvious magnet: the island neighborhood with cafés, vintage shops, bars and actual street life. Inside it, SoFo (south of Folkungagatan) is the classic hipster pocket and Hornstull the waterfront side, a bit calmer. Vasastan suits people who want to be central but sleep in peace — residential, handsome, full of neighborhood cafés, without Söder's noise. Kungsholmen is the next island over, with a waterside promenade and slightly less brutal prices; good if you run or want quiet. And to stretch your money without going far, Hammarby Sjöstad is modern, tidy, canal-side and 15-20 minutes from the center by tram (Tvärbanan) or ferry. Östermalm is beautiful and expensive; few nomads live there.

ComunidadCommunity

Easy on the practical side, slower on the emotional one. English is essentially universal — you can live here for years without Swedish and nobody blinks — and there's a big international crowd thanks to the tech ecosystem and the universities. Startup, product and dev meetups happen almost weekly. The Spanish-speaking community is real and not small: there's an older Latin American diaspora (notably Chilean, from the 1970s) plus newer Spaniards and Latin Americans. The honest part: Swedes are friendly but slow to open up, and in winter social life moves indoors into people's homes. If you don't join something structured — gym, choir, running club, coworking, Swedish classes (the free public SFI courses are only for registered residents) — you can go two months talking mostly to the cashier.

Three things that hurt if you don't know them upfront. One: housing. The queue for first-hand rentals is measured in years, so as a nomad you'll live on sublets (andrahand) via Blocket Bostad, Qasa or Facebook groups — and deposit scams there are textbook: never wire money for a flat you haven't seen, or to someone who's "currently abroad". Two: the light. In December the sun rises around 8:45 and sets before 15:00; that's not a fun fact, it genuinely drags on people's mood. Summer is the opposite — glorious, with daylight past 22:00 — though in July half the city goes on holiday and plenty of businesses close. Three: the personnummer. Sweden is effectively cashless and many services hang off BankID, which in practice requires a personal number — and you only get one by registering for a long stay, not on a 90-day tourist entry. Without it, Swish and various admin tasks simply won't work for you, so arrive with an international card that works everywhere. Add that alcohol above 3.5% is sold only at Systembolaget (expensive, short hours, closed Sundays), that Sweden has no digital nomad visa — you come on the 90-day Schengen allowance or another residence permit — and that the exchange rate rules everything: with a weak krona the city is far more manageable than the "most expensive cities" lists suggest, and with a strong krona everything jumps at once.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
