It's the gateway to the 'Emerald Triangle', where Thailand, Laos and Cambodia meet. Every July it holds its famous Candle Festival (Khao Phansa), with enormous floats of carved beeswax. Around it are temples, Mekong cliffs with prehistoric rock paintings and smoky, fiery Isan food. It's an authentic Isan, far from the beaches and mass tourism.
