Bangkok is an assault on the senses you either love or don't get: golden temples beside skyscrapers, food stalls on every corner and a chaos that, incredibly, works. Cheap, hyper-connected and with the planet's best street food, it's the nomad's gateway to Asia.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Bangkok? How much do you need per month in Bangkok?
Bangkok works brilliantly if you want a real big city as your base: fast, cheap internet, world-class food for US$2, a decent train system and cheap flights to the rest of Asia. It stops working if you need clean air, nature or a walkable life — from December to April the PM2.5 pollution is a genuine health problem, and March to May the heat keeps you locked in air conditioning. Living well here is cheap by Western standards, but it isn't the US$600-a-month Thailand that YouTube sells you.

One of the best setups in Southeast Asia. Fibre from AIS, True or 3BB gives you 300–1,000 Mbps for ≈US$15–25 a month, installed within days, and it genuinely holds up for video calls. Almost every condo is already wired. Mobile is strong too: AIS and True 5G cover the whole city, a generous data plan runs ≈US$10–20 a month, and plenty of nomads work off a hotspot without drama. One catch: the "free wifi included" in your building is usually shared across the whole floor and slow — get your own line. Blackouts aren't a real issue; heavy storms occasionally knock power out in some areas for a while. Some sites are blocked (gambling, some political and adult content): a VPN is legal, widely used, and worth installing before you arrive.
CoworkingCoworking
A mature scene with plenty of choice. A hot desk runs ≈US$120–200 a month; a fixed desk or private office costs considerably more. Long-running names include The Hive (Thong Lo, Sathorn, Prakanong), JustCo, Spaces and WeWork in downtown towers, and True Digital Park in Punnawithi, the big tech hub with events almost every week. Coworkings still open and close often, though — check the one you're counting on is still trading before you rent nearby. If you'd rather not commit to a membership, Bangkok's café-working culture is enormous: in Ari or Ekkamai you can sit for four hours with a ≈US$3 coffee and nobody bothers you, though wifi and power sockets are a lottery. Most condo buildings also have a co-working lounge included, which is fine for calls but usually dead socially.
Ari is the nomad favourite right now: local-feeling, tree-lined, packed with cafés and street food, right on the BTS, and cheaper than Sukhumvit. Ekkamai and Thong Lo are the expat/creative corridor — best restaurants and bars, most walkable nightlife, but the most expensive rents and the side streets (sois) are long, so "near the BTS" often means a 15-minute walk or a motorbike taxi. Phra Khanong and On Nut, two or three stops further out on the same line, are where people go when they want a real 1-bedroom in a modern building for noticeably less, with a proper fresh market and enough cafés to survive. Ratchada and Rama 9 on the MRT are the cheap-and-central option: bland tower blocks, great value, big Chinese and Korean scene, less charm. Sathorn and Silom work if you want the business district and river access, but they empty out at weekends.
ComunidadCommunity
One of the easiest cities in the world to land in alone. There's a permanent, constantly rotating nomad population, active Facebook groups and meetups, events almost weekly at the bigger coworkings and at True Digital Park, and Muay Thai gyms and run clubs that are the real social shortcut — you'll make friends faster in a gym than at a networking night. English is enough for daily life in the central districts: menus, condo management, Grab, doctors. Thai is a different alphabet and tonal, so most people never get past pleasantries, and that keeps you a bit inside the foreigner bubble. The Spanish-speaking community exists but is small and scattered — expect to live your day in English. Downside of a hub this big: people leave constantly, and after a few months of goodbyes some nomads burn out on it.
The honest warning is the air. From roughly December to April, PM2.5 in Bangkok gets genuinely bad — smog you can see, days when apps tell you to stay indoors. If you have asthma or small kids, that's a real reason to base elsewhere those months, or at least buy a proper air purifier (≈US$150–250, worth every baht). Second: the heat. March to May is 35–40°C with brutal humidity, and your electricity bill spikes. Rainy season runs roughly May–October, with short violent downpours and street flooding, but it doesn't ruin the month. On housing: standard leases are 12 months with 2 months' deposit plus 1 month up front, so short stays cost a premium — and be aware that renting a condo for under 30 days is against Thai law in most buildings, which is why Airbnb hosts get thrown out and guests occasionally get caught in the middle. Book monthly through a local agent or a serviced apartment instead. On visas: Thailand's Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), launched in 2024, is aimed at remote workers — 5 years, multiple entry, 180 days per entry with an extension possible, and proof of funds (≈500,000 THB) — but the requirements and the visa-exempt stay for tourists have been rewritten more than once in recent years, so confirm with the embassy or consulate before you book anything. Don't plan on doing back-to-back border runs; immigration has tightened on that. And on the city itself: traffic is as bad as its reputation, so pay more to live within walking distance of a BTS or MRT station — it's the single decision that decides whether you like Bangkok. Violent crime is rare and the city feels safe late at night, but scams aimed at foreigners (tuk-tuk "tours", gem shops, jet-ski damage claims) are constant; use Grab, use the meter, and ignore anyone who approaches you first.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
