La Haya
Aprox. 474,292 habitantesApprox. 474,292 people
The Hague (Den Haag) is the seat of the Dutch government, even though Amsterdam is the official capital. Parliament, the king and the embassies are here, which is why it's called the 'city of peace and justice': it hosts the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court. But it's not all suits and treaties. It has a stately old center around the Binnenhof, one of the world's best small museums (the Mauritshuis, home to Vermeer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring') and something no other major Dutch city offers: a beach. The Scheveningen district is a North Sea resort with its huge pier. It's an elegant, calm and very walkable city.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en La Haya? How much do you need per month in La Haya?
Tampoco es para quien busca caos y calor: el clima es gris, ventoso y en pleno invierno oscurece cerca de las 16:30.The Hague works well if you earn in euros or strong dollars and you value a calm, orderly life: it's a hyper-international city (International Court of Justice, ICC, Europol, dozens of embassies and multinationals), English everywhere, first-world internet, and the beach 15-20 minutes away by tram. It does not work if you're here to stretch a budget — the Netherlands is expensive, and the real problem isn't the money, it's finding housing at all: the rental market is brutal and many landlords won't let you register your address. It's also not for anyone chasing chaos and heat: the weather is grey and windy, and in midwinter it's dark by around 4:30pm.

You won't have problems here: the Netherlands has some of the best internet infrastructure in Europe. At home 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps is the norm for ≈US$50-65/month (≈€45-55); on fiber (KPN, Odido, Delta) it's usually symmetric, on coax cable (Ziggo) download is just as good but upload is noticeably lower — ask before signing if you do heavy video calls or upload big files. It's genuinely stable: power cuts are not a fact of daily life, and there's no censorship or need for a VPN. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is excellent across the city, including on the tram and out at Scheveningen beach; a plan with generous data runs ≈US$18-30/month. One catch: getting a connection activated in a new flat can take one to three weeks, so if you're on a short lease, negotiate a place where internet is already connected.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene exists and is comfortable, but it's small next to Amsterdam: The Hague is a city of institutional and diplomatic offices more than startups, so much of what's on offer is polished flex-office chains (Spaces, Regus and similar, with locations near Den Haag Centraal) plus a handful of independent spaces; The Hague Tech is the best-known hub for the local tech and innovation crowd, with events and a real community. A monthly flex desk runs ≈US$230-400 (≈€200-350) depending on the space and plan, and a private office goes well above that; almost everywhere lets you buy a day pass before committing. A real and widely used alternative: the central public library (Bibliotheek Den Haag, by the Spui) is huge, with good wifi and free work tables, plus the cafés downtown.
Zeeheldenkwartier is the favorite for people arriving young and car-free: 19th-century streets, cafés, bars and a market, walking distance from the center, with the least absurd rents among the good areas. Statenkwartier is the classic expat neighborhood between downtown and the beach — quiet, green, full of people from international organizations, pricier and more family-oriented; Benoordenhout plays in the same league, close to the international schools. Scheveningen puts you on the North Sea with a direct tram downtown; it empties out and gets windy in winter, but plenty of people happily trade that for running on the beach. And if money is tight, Regentessekwartier and Valkenboskwartier just west are more local and multicultural, with noticeably lower rents and still a 15-minute bike ride from the center.
ComunidadCommunity
It's one of the easiest cities in Europe to land in without the local language: between the international courts, Europol, the embassies and the multinationals, a huge share of the city is foreign, and English works at the supermarket, the doctor and in daily life — you learn Dutch if you stay, not to survive. There are international meetups, very active expat groups and plenty of social sport (running, padel, surfing at Scheveningen). There is a Spanish-speaking community, mostly around the Latin American and Spanish embassies, but it's low-key: don't expect Madrid or Barcelona volume. The cultural catch: the Dutch are friendly and direct, but their friend circles have been closed since school and everything gets scheduled weeks ahead, so deeper ties take time — most of your early social life will be with other foreigners.
The hard part isn't the cost, it's getting an apartment. The Dutch rental market is jammed: a decent flat gets listed and dozens of people apply the same day, and many landlords want income of about three times the rent plus an employment contract — as a freelancer you'll get rejected often, so show up with bank statements and client contracts ready. On top of that, the mid-market rent regulation that took effect in 2024 pushed a fair number of landlords to sell rather than rent, so there's less free-market supply than before, not more. Watch two specific things: rent is almost always advertised as "kale huur" (bare), excluding electricity, gas and water, which easily add ≈US$130-190 a month; and some landlords won't let you register at the address — without that registration at city hall there's no BSN, and without a BSN you can't open a bank account or sign up for much of anything, so ask BEFORE signing (and expect the gemeente appointment itself to take weeks). Remote rental scams (pretty photos, deposit up front, keys that never arrive) are a classic here: don't wire money without seeing the place or dealing with a verifiable agency. If you're not from the EU, the Netherlands has no digital nomad visa: you get the 90-days-in-any-180 Schengen allowance, full stop; the real route to staying is a self-employment permit, and US citizens have the DAFT treaty, which requires parking a minimum amount of capital in a Dutch company — confirm the figures and requirements with the IND before planning anything. And the weather: grey, constant drizzle, and a North Sea wind that genuinely bites in winter. If sunlight affects your mood, come test-drive it in November, not July.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
