Groningen
Aprox. 181,194 habitantesApprox. 181,194 people
Groningen is the big city of the northern Netherlands: capital of its province, young and student-driven thanks to the University of Groningen, one of the largest student populations in the country. It's flat, compact and utterly bike-first —here the bicycle rules over the car—. The old center revolves around the Grote Markt square and the Martinitoren tower, and a few kilometers out the open polder landscape opens up toward the Wadden Sea.
Mejor épocaBest time
Mild maritime climate: summers (May–September) are gentle with very long daylight; winter is grey, windy and damp rather than bitterly cold. May–June and the start of term in September are the liveliest.
PresupuestoBudget
The Netherlands is pricey, but as a student city it's cheaper than Amsterdam. Budget roughly 1,100–1,600 USD/month living modestly; eating out and beer weigh less than housing.
EntradaEntry
Schengen Area: many nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Check the rule for your passport.
By bike, no contest: Groningen is one of the most cycling-friendly cities on earth and you cross the center in minutes. Walking works too; trains link it to the rest of the country from the central station.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Groningen? How much do you need per month in Groningen?
Groningen works if you want a small, extremely safe, fully bikeable European base with flawless internet and English everywhere, for a good bit less than Amsterdam. Cheap it is not — these are Western European prices — and the real filter isn't your budget but finding somewhere to live: the Dutch rental market is brutal and almost no landlord rents for under six months. If you want sun, a big nomad scene, or three-figure rents, look elsewhere.

No drama here: the Netherlands has some of the best networks anywhere and Groningen is well wired. Fibre plans run from 200 Mb to 1 Gb at ≈US$50–70 a month (KPN, Odido and other providers on the same network); on fibre upload matches download, while Ziggo's cable gives you plenty of download but noticeably less upload — if you're on video calls or pushing big files, ask for fibre specifically. It's genuinely stable: the Dutch grid basically never fails, so blackouts aren't a thing. 4G/5G coverage is excellent across the city and out in the countryside too, so you can work from the train, and a decent data plan runs ≈US$12–22 a month (Simyo, Lebara, Odido). One catch: internet contracts are usually 12 months, so for a short stay look for a flat where it's already included — ask before you sign.
CoworkingCoworking
It's a university town of around 240,000 with tens of thousands of students between the RUG and the Hanze, so there are places to work — but don't expect a Lisbon or Barcelona scene: a handful of spaces, aimed more at local startups and freelancers than at passing nomads. A flex-desk monthly runs ≈US$170–260; standalone day passes aren't always a thing, so ask before showing up. The free wildcard is Forum Groningen, the library-and-culture building by the Nieuwe Markt: tables, plugs, wifi and plenty of people working (the cinema and museum are ticketed separately). Careful with cafés — plenty of Dutch ones aren't laptop places, have few plugs and close early, so check before you settle in for four hours.
The Binnenstad (historic centre) is the most convenient and the priciest: everything on foot, though on weekends the Grote Markt and Poelestraat area is bar noise until late. To the northwest, next to Noorderplantsoen park, is Schildersbuurt: pretty streets, cafés, thirtysomethings — where most people would want to live. South, Oosterpoort and the Hereweg area mix students and young professionals, better prices, ten minutes by bike from the centre. Helpman, further south, is quiet and residential — better if you want calm and space. And to pay less: Paddepoel and Selwerd to the northwest (near the Zernike campus) or Korrewegwijk to the northeast, cheaper and more mixed, but with less charm.
ComunidadCommunity
Meeting people is easy on the international side and hard on the Dutch side. The university brings thousands of students and young researchers from across Europe, everyone's English is excellent and you'll never get stuck over language — you need Dutch for paperwork and for really integrating long-term. There are tech, sport and language meetups, and fairly active expat groups. The downside: the Spanish-speaking community is small compared with Amsterdam, Rotterdam or The Hague, and the Dutch lock in their social circle early and don't open it much — your friends will probably be other foreigners. There's also heavy turnover: the city empties out in summer and people leave when the master's ends.
What a friend would tell you: the problem isn't money, it's finding housing. The Dutch housing shortage is real, supply is tiny, many landlords won't rent for under six or twelve months, and in August–September, when students arrive, it's near impossible — the universities themselves warn internationals not to come without a roof lined up. Watch out for scams on Facebook groups and room portals: never pay a deposit before seeing the place or doing a video call. Always ask whether you can register with the city at that address (inschrijving); no registration means no BSN, and without a BSN the bank and most everything else gets complicated — and some landlords offer rooms where you can't register. Rental rules changed recently (points-based rent caps) and how that plays out on the ground varies, so get in writing what the price includes and how big the deposit is. The weather bites: this is the north — grey, windy, frequently raining, and in winter it's dark by around 16:30, which hits a lot of people hard. The city is among the safest you'll ever set foot in, but bike theft is a national sport — buy two good locks and never leave it with just one. On visas: the Netherlands has no digital nomad visa; non-EU, you're on 90 days in 180 in Schengen, apart from specific routes like the Dutch-American Friendship Treaty (DAFT), which is US citizens only and requires setting up a company here and locking up capital — check that with an immigration adviser, not a blog.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
