Tánger

Aprox. 688,356 habitantesApprox. 688,356 people

Tangier is Africa's gateway: it sits where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, facing Spain across the Strait of Gibraltar — you can see the Spanish coast with the naked eye. For decades it was a cosmopolitan international zone that drew writers like Paul Bowles and the Beats, and that mix still lingers. It has a steep walled medina tumbling toward the port, a kasbah up top, and a European-flavored new town. Chaotic, bright, with sea views everywhere.

Summer brings heat and crowds; winter is rainy and windy.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Tánger? How much do you need per month in Tánger?

Tangier works if you want Europe-cheap without being in Europe: Africa an hour by ferry from Tarifa, mild weather, a café on every corner, and a cost of living well below what you'd pay in southern Spain. If you speak Spanish you have a genuine edge — it's one of the Moroccan cities where Spanish is most widely spoken, a legacy of the protectorate and the old international-zone years. It does not work if you need a big organized nomad scene, if you depend on flawless fiber (the connection depends on the building, not the city), or if your social life runs on alcohol and nightlife.

Set expectations: Morocco's fixed internet is slower than the European average and fiber arrived late. The three carriers (Maroc Telecom, Orange, inwi) sell home plans, and where fiber reaches it's fine for video calls all day; where it doesn't, you're on ADSL, with low speeds and a weak upload — and upload is what actually kills a call. The variable isn't the city, it's the building: newer towers in Malabata or downtown usually have fiber, many old buildings in the medina and Kasbah don't. ALWAYS ask about the actual connection before signing, and ask for a speed test run inside that specific apartment, not the building next door. Mobile is your mandatory backup: data is good and cheap citywide. One thing that may surprise you: app-based voice and video calls (WhatsApp, Skype) have a history of being blocked or degraded in Morocco; they generally work now, but if they fail it probably isn't your wifi, so install a VPN before you arrive. Power cuts are not a daily problem.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is small, and honestly it isn't why you come to Tangier: spaces exist, but there are few and the community is modest next to Marrakech or Casablanca. The institutional anchor is Technopark Tangier, the public-private startup incubation network that also operates in Casablanca and Rabat — more a local entrepreneur ecosystem than a drop-in nomad room. A handful of small independent spaces have opened around it, mostly downtown and toward Malabata; names change and places close often, so check what's still open on Google Maps before you count on one. A monthly hot desk runs around ≈US$80-150 (roughly 800 to 1,500 dirhams), with wide variation depending on whether meeting rooms are included. The practical truth is that a lot of people work from cafés: Tangier has a serious café culture and there are places with solid wifi and outlets, though the old-school traditional cafés are more for sitting and watching the Strait than for opening a laptop. If your work depends on long calls, prioritize an apartment with a good connection and treat coworking as your social outlet.

Malabata is where most long-stayers end up: newer buildings along the seafront to the east, furnished apartments, big supermarkets and malls nearby — comfortable and soulless, but with the best odds of decent fiber. Downtown / Ville Nouvelle (around Boulevard Pasteur and Place de France) is the walkable option: cafés, banks, market, everything on foot, and cheaper than the new coastline. Marshan is the quiet residential neighborhood above the Kasbah, with Strait views and a real neighborhood feel; it's where people who actually stayed live, not week-long visitors. The Medina and Kasbah are the fantasy — gorgeous old houses, alleyways, light — and they work if your priority is the experience rather than bandwidth: patchy internet, noise, and you carry your groceries uphill on foot.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easy at street level and harder at nomad level: Moroccan social life happens in cafés and people are open, but don't expect a packed calendar of remote-work meetups like Lisbon or Medellín — Tangier's foreign community skews toward long-term residents, French, Spanish and retirees, rather than a fresh crop of laptops every month. The big advantage for you: Spanish is genuinely heard here, far more than in the rest of the country, a legacy of the protectorate, and the Instituto Cervantes in Tangier is an obvious hub for classes and cultural events. Daily life runs on Darija (Moroccan Arabic), with French as the functional second language for paperwork, banks and restaurants; English shows up mostly in tourism and among younger people. Learning twenty words of Darija changes how you're treated at the market more than anything else you can do.

What a friend would tell you. One: Morocco has NO digital nomad visa. Many nationalities get 90 days visa-free and that's it; extending through the police is bureaucratic and often doesn't happen, so people do exit-and-return runs via the Tarifa ferry or Ceuta — it works, but it's a limbo, not a multi-year plan, and overstaying means fines and friction on the way out. Two: summer. In July and August Tangier fills with Moroccans living in Europe plus tourists, and short-term rents spike; arrive in that window and you'll pay more for less. Three: winter. December to February brings rain and Atlantic damp, and almost no apartment has heating; it feels far colder than the thermometer suggests, so budget for an electric heater and check that the windows actually close. Four: the wind. Tangier is famously windy thanks to its spot on the Strait, and the levante can blow for days on end; some people love it, others lose their minds. Five, money: the dirham is a closed currency you can't easily get outside the country, the economy is still very cash-based beyond malls and supermarkets, and landlords typically want cash, one or two months' deposit and informal contracts — bring a trusted local into the negotiation, because the "foreigner price" is real. And in the medina, especially around the Petit Socco, you'll run into fake guides and very persistent hustlers; a firm no and continuing to walk solves almost all of it. Finally, plan around Ramadan: schedules change completely, many restaurants close during daylight, and the city comes alive at night.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
