Fez

Fez is the oldest of Morocco's imperial cities and its spiritual and intellectual heart. Its medina, Fes el-Bali, is a walled maze of car-free alleys, reckoned one of the largest pedestrian urban spaces in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside stands the Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in the 9th century and often cited as the oldest continuously operating university in the world, along with madrasas of exquisite tilework and stucco and the famous tanneries where leather is dyed as it was centuries ago. Less touristy and more authentic than Marrakech, Fez is intense, sensory and deeply Moroccan.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Fez?How much do you need per month in Fez?

Fez works if you want to cut your cost of living in half and you're genuinely interested in Morocco: daily life is dirt cheap and the city is one of the most intense and beautiful in the Arab world. It doesn't work if you want a nomad scene, nightlife, or flawless internet — nearly every foreigner here is an Arabic student, a researcher, or a three-day tourist, and coworking means a handful of spaces, not an ecosystem. It's a base for reading, writing and saving money; for networking, go to Marrakech or Casablanca.

The three carriers are Maroc Telecom, Orange and Inwi. In Ville Nouvelle and the newer districts you get fiber: ~100 to 200 Mbps plans for ≈US$25–40 a month that hold up fine. The catch is that fiber goes building by building, not neighborhood by neighborhood — two streets apart can mean fiber or old ADSL. The medina is a different story: lots of shared ADSL and single-digit-to-low-double-digit Mbps that degrades in bad weather. Hard rule: if you take video calls, run a speedtest INSIDE the actual place before paying the first month, and don't trust the listing. Getting your own line requires paperwork (ID, sometimes the owner's documents), so in furnished rentals you usually inherit the landlord's connection. Mobile 4G is good, widespread and cheap across the city, and that's your real backup; 5G is rolling out in Morocco and is concentrated in parts of the big cities — you may catch it in some areas of Fez, but don't build your life around it. Power cuts are rare; water cuts have happened in drought years. One historical note: Morocco has blocked VoIP calls (WhatsApp, Skype) at times; they generally work now, but keep a VPN installed just in case.

CoworkingCoworking

Una mensualidad ronda los ≈US$60–120 y un day pass ≈US$6–12. You can count the scene on one hand and it's almost all in Ville Nouvelle. A monthly membership runs ≈US$60–120 and a day pass ≈US$6–12. I'm deliberately not naming places: in Fez these spaces open and close often, so find them once you land and go see them in person before paying for a month. The real alternative is the café — Fez is a café city — but be warned: many are social, mostly male, and have no outlets; they're not laptop cafés. The modern places downtown, the chains, and hotel lobbies will let you work for hours. If your job depends on video calls, the play is fiber at home with coworking as your social outlet, not the other way around.

Ville Nouvelle (the Dar Debibagh area) is the obvious bet: the French-built new city, with elevator buildings, fiber, supermarkets, cafés, and the ALIF Arabic institute. Practically every long-stay foreigner lives here. Route d'Imouzzer and Champ de Courses are the quieter, greener version: decent buildings, reasonable prices, but you'll rely on taxis for everything. Narjiss and Aïn Kadous are modern residential, cheap and very local — no tourism, no English. Fes el-Bali, the medina, is magical and exhausting: no cars, you carry the groceries in on foot, old houses that are cold and damp in winter, and weak internet; live it for a month, not a year. Fes el-Jdid sits between the two and is the cheap option with a foot in each world.

ComunidadCommunity

Be honest with yourself: there is no nomad community in Fez. The foreigners who stay are Arabic students (the ALIF institute in Ville Nouvelle is the main magnet), researchers, NGO people, and the odd teacher. You do meet interesting people, but it's a small, slow-turning circle with few meetups and most of it running through Facebook groups and word of mouth. The daily language is Darija (Moroccan Arabic); French opens almost every urban and administrative door, English only works on the tourist circuit and with students, and Spanish is barely used — that's the north of the country, not Fez. The upside: Moroccan hospitality is real, and you will be invited for tea and for actual meals. If you speak no French or Arabic and expect to find your people at a coworking desk, you'll be lonely.

Morocco has no digital nomad visa: most European and several Latin American passports get 90 days visa-free (not all of them — check yours before booking) and that's where the easy plan ends. Staying longer means a carte de séjour, which requires justification and patience with the bureaucracy, or leaving the country — and "border runs" to Ceuta or Melilla don't always reset the clock, so confirm before betting on it. The climate is extreme: Fez is inland with no sea, and July–August goes past 40°C. What nobody warns you about is winter: nights near 5°C, no heating, thick damp walls — you'll end up buying a gas heater. Ramadan changes the whole city for a month: restaurants closed during the day, odd hours, life starting after sundown. It's a conservative city: alcohol is expensive, scarce and frowned upon, and nightlife is basically nonexistent. Rent is almost always cash with no formal contract, you'll be quoted foreigner prices, and several months up front is common — haggle and ask a local what the real rate is. And in the medina, the fake guides and the constant sales pressure wear you down; solo women get steady comments. None of this is serious danger (Fez is one of the calmer cities for violent crime), but it's daily friction, and you have to actually want it.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
