Szeged

Aprox. 164,883 habitantesApprox. 164,883 people

Szeged is the big city of southern Hungary, on the banks of the Tisza River and very close to the Serbian border. They call it 'the city of sunshine' for its daylight hours, among the country's highest. Its present face was born of tragedy: the great flood of 1879 wiped out almost all of it, and it was rebuilt in one go with boulevards and squares of Viennese air that make it elegant and very walkable. It's a lively university city with two very specific culinary claims: Szeged paprika and its Tisza-river fish soup. Compact, handsome and authentic without being pricey.

Mejor épocaBest time

El invierno es frío.May to September, with sunny, warm summers (it's Hungary's sunniest city). Summer brings the famous Szeged Open-Air Festival. Winter is cold.

PresupuestoBudget

Cheap by European standards: Hungary uses the forint, not the euro, and prices outside Budapest are even lower. Food, beer and lodging very reasonable.

EntradaEntry

Hungary is in the Schengen area: a single visa (or exemption) covers most of Europe. Many nationalities enter visa-free for tourism.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Szeged? How much do you need per month in Szeged?

Szeged is one of the cheapest, calmest bases you can have inside the EU: a flat, walkable university city of about 160,000, with trams, excellent internet and rents well below Budapest. It works if you want to focus, save money and keep Schengen within reach; it doesn't work if you need a ready-made nomad community, a local airport, or to live in English — daily life here runs in Hungarian and the nearest commercial airport is ~170 km away (Budapest). Winters are cold, grey and foggy, and summers are among the hottest in Hungary.

This is Hungary's — and Szeged's — strong suit: fiber and cable reach almost the whole city, and several hundred Mbps (up to 1 Gbps at many addresses) is normal and cheap, roughly ≈US$20–30/month depending on the deal. The main providers are Telekom, Yettel and One (the brand created by merging Vodafone Hungary and DIGI). It's stable: no blackouts, no chronic outages, no censorship or VPN needed, and a full day of video calls is a non-issue. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is solid across the city and along the corridor to Budapest. The practical catch: fiber contracts usually run 12 or 24 months, so for a short stay it's better to inherit the flat's line or lean on mobile data, which is more than enough.

CoworkingCoworking

The coworking scene is minimal and, honestly, marginal: a few spaces, several tied to the university and the local startup/research ecosystem (the University of Szeged and the ELI-ALPS laser facility bring in plenty of technical people), but there's no broad offer and nothing resembling a nomad hub. I won't invent names for you: once you're there, ask in the city's Facebook groups and at the university, since these places open and close often. A monthly pass runs roughly ≈US$60–120 and day passes usually exist, but confirm prices and hours on the spot. In practice almost everyone working remotely here does it from home — flats are big and cheap — and uses downtown cafés and the university libraries as a second office.

Belváros (the center, inside the Nagykörút ring boulevard): eclectic architecture rebuilt after the great 1879 flood, the Cathedral square (Dóm tér), everything on foot. Best pick for a short stay with life around you — also the priciest and the noisiest along the bar streets. Újszeged, across the Tisza: greener and quieter, with Erzsébet liget park, houses and low-rises; ideal if you work from home and want silence, 10–15 minutes from the center by tram or bike. Felsőváros, north, near the university clinics: lots of international medical students, mid-range rents, everything close. Rókus / Tarján, west: socialist-era panel blocks, ugly from the outside but cheap, well connected by tram, with supermarkets and a mall nearby — this is where the budget actually stretches.

ComunidadCommunity

This is a student city, not a nomad city. The foreign community is real and visible — the University of Szeged runs medical and science programs in English that pull in a lot of internationals, plus the Erasmus circuit — so meeting young international people is easy if you plug into those circles: Erasmus network events, language exchanges in bars, university sports. What barely exists is a stable digital-nomad or Spanish-speaking community: you'll run into Spaniards and Latin Americans on Erasmus, but they rotate every semester. Daily life runs in Hungarian; students and university staff speak good English, but at the market, with your landlord or at the immigration office you'll hit pure Hungarian. Watch the calendar too: in July and August the students leave and the city empties out, except during the summer open-air festival.

Four things that will bite you if you don't see them coming. The "rezsi": in Hungary utilities are paid on top of rent, and winter heating gas spikes — a badly insulated flat can double your costs from December to February. ALWAYS ask what the previous tenant paid in January before signing. The rental calendar: this is a student town, so in August and September the market floods with students and both prices and availability get worse; if you can, hunt for a flat in spring or mid-semester. Contracts usually want two months' deposit and are sometimes handled informally — insist on a written one. The weather: Szeged brands itself as Hungary's sunniest city, but that's the summer, and summer on the Great Plain hits hard — heatwaves of 35 °C and up, plus mosquitoes off the Tisza (they spray, and they're still annoying); winter is cold, grey and foggy. Logistical isolation: there are no regular commercial flights from Szeged. Budapest is roughly 2–3 hours by train or bus, with Timișoara and Belgrade a similar drive; to fly cheap you'll travel before you travel. Add that Hungarian is genuinely hard. If you're not an EU citizen, Schengen tourist rules give you 90 days out of every 180; Hungary does have a digital nomad visa (the "White Card"), but it requires proven high income and work for a non-Hungarian company, and the thresholds have changed — confirm the current requirements before counting on it. And since prices are in forints and Hungary went through a very sharp inflation spell recently, treat these USD figures as an order of magnitude, not a fixed price.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
