Surat Thani
Aprox. 127,201 habitantesApprox. 127,201 people
Surat Thani is the gateway to the Gulf of Thailand: most travelers just pass through on their way to the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, reached by ferry from Donsak pier. But the province hides much more. Here you'll find Khao Sok National Park, with its ancient rainforest and Cheow Lan Lake; the Chaiya district, cradle of the Srivijaya kingdom; and Suan Mokkh, the meditation monastery founded by the monk Buddhadasa. The city itself, on the Tapi River, is warm, humid and commercial, famous for its oysters and rambutan.
Mejor épocaBest time
January to April, the driest season on the Gulf. Southern Thailand gets heavy rain around October–December, out of step with the rest of the country; plan ferries with a buffer in monsoon season.
PresupuestoBudget
Thailand is affordable: backpackers and nomads live comfortably on $800–1,400/month. Street food is dirt-cheap and excellent; the islands push prices up.
EntradaEntry
Many nationalities enter Thailand visa-free for short stays (30–60 day exemption depending on passport). It's an easy country for independent travel.
Songthaews and tuk-tuks in town. The airport and train station link to Bangkok; ferries from Donsak and Ban Don head to the islands. It's above all a transit hub.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Surat Thani? How much do you need per month in Surat Thani?
Surat Thani works if you want to live genuinely cheap in southern Thailand with fast fiber and a ferry ride to Samui, Phangan and Tao without paying island prices. It's a working provincial capital: markets, the Tapi River, bus terminals and a small airport that serves as a cheap way into the islands. It works badly if you're expecting a nomad scene — there's no remote-worker community here, English is thin outside the transit agencies, and most foreigners you see are on their way to the pier. It's a low-cost base with good internet, not a social hub.

This is the strong point: Thai fiber is cheap, fast and reaches provincial capitals properly. A home plan of 200–500 Mbps runs ≈US$15–20 a month with AIS, 3BB or True, and it holds up fine for video calls. Two caveats: cheap plans usually have upload well below download, so if you stream or push big files, confirm the symmetry before signing; and international bandwidth (outside Thailand) can feel slower than the headline number, especially at peak hours. Mobile 4G/5G coverage downtown and around Phun Phin is solid and works as a hotspot backup. Power cuts happen but they're occasional, mostly during heavy storms — the real risk isn't daily blackouts, it's the rainy season.
CoworkingCoworking
Straight up: there's no coworking scene here. This isn't Chiang Mai or Phangan. Small spaces may open and close, but there's nothing established enough to plan around, and I'm not going to invent names for you. In practice you work from home on the fiber (that's the payoff) or from air-conditioned cafés with wifi — downtown ones and the ones in the Central mall do the job, at ≈US$2–3 a coffee. If you need a real coworking with people around, the nearest is on Koh Phangan (the Srithanu side) or Samui, one ferry away — and there the monthly passes are island-priced, well above everything else on this list.
The center along the Tapi River, around Talad Mai road and the markets, is the most walkable part and where the night-market life is. Ban Don is the old riverside area near the pier and the terminals: cheap, very Thai, handy if you're bouncing to and from the islands. Around the Central mall, in the Makham Tia sector, is the newer stuff — mall, modern buildings, condos — and it's where people who want comfort usually land. Phun Phin, about 13 km west, is where the train station is: cheaper still, but it ties you to a scooter. Important heads-up: there is no "foreigner neighborhood" here; the few who live in town are scattered and are usually here for a Thai partner or a local job.
ComunidadCommunity
Hard, and you should know that before buying the ticket. There's no nomad community and no meetup calendar; the foreigners living in Surat Thani are few and are usually here for family or a job, not for remote work. Day-to-day life runs in Thai: outside the transit agencies, hotels and the mall, English is limited, and there's no Spanish-speaking community to speak of. Learning the Thai alphabet and a handful of phrases changes your experience here a lot. If your plan is to make friends fast, the ferry to Koh Phangan is your social exit — that's where the actual remote scene is.
First: the gulf-side rainy season runs roughly October to December, the opposite of Phuket, and it's not a decorative drizzle — the Tapi basin has a history of serious flooding in southern Thailand. If you sign a lease, ask whether the street floods and avoid ground floors in areas known to take on water. Second: heat and humidity all year; A/C isn't a luxury and you'll see it on the electric bill. Third: leases are usually 6 to 12 months with one or two months' deposit, and getting the deposit back isn't always clean — photograph everything on move-in. Fourth: this is a transit town, with bus and ferry agencies of mixed reputation; buy at the terminal or from known operators and be wary of the cheapest offer. Fifth, visas: the Thai tourist exemption has been 60 days extendable by +30 at immigration, and since 2024 there's the DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) aimed at remote workers, with long stays per entry — the terms of both have shifted more than once, so confirm current lengths, requirements and fees with the embassy before counting on them. And an honest one: a scooter is basically mandatory and local traffic doesn't forgive; helmet always, a valid license, and insurance that actually covers motorbikes — plenty of travel policies exclude you if you don't hold a motorcycle license.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
