Stavanger
Aprox. 121,610 habitantesApprox. 121,610 people
Stavanger is the city of southwest Norway, in the Rogaland region, known as the country's oil capital. It pairs a core of white wooden 18th- and 19th-century houses (Gamle Stavanger) with a lively harbor and a street of brightly painted façades. But its biggest draw sits just outside town: it's the gateway to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and the Lysefjord, two of Norway's most famous landscapes. It's expensive, like all of the country, but very walkable and surprisingly warm in summer.
Mejor épocaBest time
May to September, with very long days and the mountain trails open and dry. The Pulpit Rock hike is far safer without snow or ice, so avoid winter for that.
PresupuestoBudget
Norway is very expensive: eating out, alcohol and transport all hit hard. Cooking, using public transport and leaning on the free right to roam (allemannsretten) help keep costs down.
EntradaEntry
Norway is in the Schengen area (though not the EU): many nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days per 180. Longer stays require a permit.
The center is walkable. For Pulpit Rock and the Lysefjord there are combined ferries and buses from the city; check the seasonal timetables, which shift a lot outside summer.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Stavanger? How much do you need per month in Stavanger?
Stavanger works if you earn in strong euros or dollars and you value flawless infrastructure, brutal nature half an hour away, and a genuine foreign community left over from the oil industry. It doesn't work if you're stretching a budget: it's one of Europe's most expensive bases, and the weather — relentless rain and dark winters, more grey than freezing — breaks a lot of people before month three. Internet and safety are first-world with no asterisks; everything else is what costs you.

No debate here: Norway has some of the best connectivity on earth, and Stavanger is literally home to Altibox, the fibre brand of local energy company Lyse. Fibre at 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps is standard in any city flat, symmetric and stable, and many rentals come with the connection already active. Telenor and Telia 4G/5G cover the city, the Jæren area and the fjord roads well, so you can work from a café in Sandnes without drama (on the train and in tunnels the signal does drop in patches — don't schedule a critical call there). No blackouts, no water cuts: the only real threat to your workday is a winter storm downing a line somewhere rural, and in the city not even that.
CoworkingCoworking
There is a scene, but it's startup and energy people, not passing nomads: most spaces revolve around the local tech and energy ecosystem, filled with people employed by local companies rather than freelancers with backpacks. Budget ≈US$250–350 a month for a flex desk and considerably more for a private office; prices are Norwegian, not Lisbon. The cheap and widely used alternative: the central public library (Sølvberget) and cafés, which have decent wifi and don't mind you camping for hours. I won't hand you names from memory because the lineup shifts and I'd rather not send you to an address that no longer exists: ask around when you land about the spaces tied to the city's startup ecosystem, and visit before committing to a monthly plan.
Sentrum and Storhaug are the walkable, lively part: Pedersgata is the restaurant and bar street, and that's roughly where young people and most car-free foreigners live. Våland and Eiganes are quiet residential areas, slightly pricier, near Mosvatnet lake and the hospital. Hinna and Jåttåvågen are modern and practical if you'll be near the Forus business park, where half the energy sector has its offices. Madla, Sola and Tananger are where oil families historically settled — houses, a car basically mandatory, zero nightlife. And if the budget is tight, Sandnes is 15–20 minutes by train and rents noticeably cheaper.
ComunidadCommunity
Stavanger has an edge over other Norwegian cities its size: decades of oil industry left a big, stable international community — Brits, Americans, Poles, Spaniards, Latin Americans — with English-language groups and events that actually function. Practically everyone speaks excellent English, so you can live without Norwegian, though without it you're locked out of local social life and most written bureaucracy. The fastest way to meet people isn't a meetup: it's going for a walk. Hiking culture (Preikestolen, Kjerag, the DNT trails and cabins) is the social glue here. Set expectations, though: Norwegians are friendly but their friend circles have been closed since school, and your real crowd will end up mostly foreign. That's not a flaw in the city, it's just how it works.
Three friend-level warnings. One: the rain. It rains a lot (less than Bergen, but a lot), it rains sideways with wind, and winter is less cold than dark — the coast is mild, hovering around 0–5 °C, but December gives you about six hours of grey light. If weather hits your mood, come test yourself in November, not June. Two: the paperwork. Norway isn't in the EU and has no digital nomad visa: without a permit you've got the 90 Schengen days. And even legally there, without a Norwegian ID number (D-nummer or personnummer) and BankID you can't open a bank account or sign much of anything, and that takes weeks. Three: the money it takes to get in. Wine and spirits are sold only at Vinmonopolet — short hours, closed Sundays, like almost everything — and so is stronger beer; winter electricity in the NO2 zone pushes the bill up even with the state subsidy trimming the spikes; and the standard rental deposit is three months' rent frozen in a special account (depositumskonto). Which means roughly US$3,500–5,000 in cash up front to get into a decent flat. Safety: not an issue, this is one of the safest places you'll ever live.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
