Sincelejo

Aprox. 261,187 habitantesApprox. 261,187 people

Sincelejo is the capital of Sucre department, in Colombia's Caribbean region, at the heart of the Sabanas: a flat, hot cattle-country inland, far from the beaches. It's not a postcard destination but a commercial city with strong coastal energy. Its national fame comes from the Fiestas del 20 de Enero and the Corralejas, the region's popular bull-ring tradition, and from being a cradle of sabanero culture with its gaita flutes and fandangos. The heat is constant all year.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Sincelejo? How much do you need per month in Sincelejo?

Sincelejo works if you're coming for a specific reason — family, a project in the Sucre savanna, cattle, a university — and you want to spend very little while living in a real Colombian city with no expat bubble. As a base you picked off a map it barely makes sense: there's no remote-work scene, the heat is constant all twelve months, the power cuts out regularly, and there's no beach in the city. Its best argument is cheap positioning: ≈1 hr to the beaches at Tolú and Coveñas, ≈3 hrs to Cartagena.

El 4G anda bien en toda la ciudad; el 5G es irregular fuera de las zonas centrales, no cuentes con él.Fiber is real and cheap here: Claro and Tigo are the ones that actually cover the city (Movistar depends on the block), and ≈US$20-30/month gets you a 100-300 Mbps plan that handles video calls fine. The problem isn't the fiber, it's the power. Afinia, the utility for Colombia's Caribbean, cuts out often — and no power means no router and no A/C. If your job is calls, you need a UPS for the modem and router plus mobile data as backup, no exceptions. 4G is solid citywide; 5G is patchy outside the central areas, don't count on it.

CoworkingCoworking

Si encuentras algo formal, cuenta ≈US$70-120 al mes. Minimal scene, let's be honest. There's no coworking network like Medellín's or Cartagena's — what exists are small shared offices tied to local entrepreneurship programs, the chamber of commerce and the universities (Universidad de Sucre, CECAR), and they open and close often, which is why I'm not naming any: check on the ground. If you find something formal, budget ≈US$70-120/month. In practice almost everyone works from home with the A/C running, or from cafés downtown and in the malls — though few are built for six-hour sits with an outlet and real cooling.

There's barely a foreign population as such: the outsiders here are mostly Venezuelan, and they live in working-class and outlying barrios, not expat zones. If you want where the money and the out-of-towners settle, look at Venecia and La Ford (the traditional middle- and upper-middle-class barrios) and Los Alpes, plus the newer gated complexes going up along the road to Corozal. El Centro is where everything happens by day — shops, banks, market — but it's loud and empties out at night. Corozal, ≈15-20 minutes away, is a quieter and cheaper alternative, and it's where Las Brujas airport sits — the one that actually serves Sincelejo.

ComunidadCommunity

There is no nomad community here. No remote-work meetups, no expat groups, no events in English — if that's what you need, this isn't your city. What there is: costeños who talk to everyone. If you speak Spanish, within two weeks the neighbor, the corner shop guy and the domino table have adopted you. Life happens on the street and the porch after sundown, when the heat finally breaks. The universities (Universidad de Sucre, CECAR) keep a young crowd around, and the Venezuelan community is big and very open. Daily life is 100% in coastal Spanish — fast, dropped s's — and English is basically nonexistent outside a couple of teachers.

The heat defines everything: highs of 32-34 °C with high humidity essentially year-round, no cool season. You will live with air conditioning, and that's where the money you thought you'd save on rent goes. Add Afinia's power cuts and a rainy season (roughly April-June and August-November) that floods streets in minutes; dengue is a real thing on Colombia's Caribbean, buy repellent on day one. Water service isn't even across all barrios either — ask about the schedule for that block before you sign anything. Renting formally means a guarantor with property or rental insurance — near impossible for a newcomer, so your first months will run through monthly Airbnb or a direct deal with an owner. Safety varies a lot by barrio and by hour: fine in daylight, don't go exploring outlying areas at night, and moto-taxis are the real transport even though almost nobody hands you a helmet. If you land around January 20th, read up on the corralejas first: huge festival, heavy drinking and bulls, with a history of injuries and deaths — and editions that get suspended by court or health rulings, so confirm whether it's happening the year you arrive. Visas: tourists get 90 days extendable to 180 per year; Colombia's V Digital Nomad visa does exist and asks you to prove income of at least three Colombian minimum wages, but confirm the current requirements with the foreign ministry before planning around it.
