Cartagena de Indias is the Colombian Caribbean at its most romantic: a walled city of flowered balconies and colorful streets, with the sea on one side and salsa on the other. Sticky heat year-round, touristy and a bit pricey for Colombia, but with a beauty that floors you at sunset.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Cartagena? How much do you need per month in Cartagena?
Cartagena works for you if what you want is the actual Caribbean — sea, street life, coastal food, the walled city — and you work remotely on flexible hours from home. It is not a mature nomad hub like Medellín: the coworking scene is small, the foreign crowd turns over every few weeks, and much of the center is priced for tourists rather than for people who live there. The real filter is the climate: highs of 86-91 °F with heavy humidity twelve months a year, so air conditioning stops being a luxury and becomes a fixed line in your budget.

Home fiber from Claro, Tigo or Movistar runs roughly 100–300 Mbps for ≈US$20–30 a month, and it installs without much fuss in Bocagrande, Manga and the center. The problem isn't speed, it's power: Colombia's Caribbean coast has a track record of more frequent outages than the interior, and when the power drops you lose wifi and air conditioning at the same time. Mobile coverage in the city is good (solid 4G; 5G only in patches), so keep phone data as a genuine plan B. If you take critical video calls, ask BEFORE you sign whether the building has a backup generator.
CoworkingCoworking
A small scene concentrated between the Old Town, Getsemaní and Bocagrande: a handful of coworkings plus cafés and hotels that rent desks by the day. A monthly hot desk runs about ≈US$100–180 and a day pass around ≈US$10–15, but prices move, so treat those as a reference rather than a quote. I'm not giving you names because spaces here open and close often and I don't want to send you to a locked door: check recent reviews and try a day before paying for a month. Two things worth confirming in person: that they have a backup generator, and that the air conditioning actually works in the room where you'd be sitting.
Getsemaní is where almost every nomad lands first: walkable, bohemian, right against the city wall and full of bars — charming by day, loud at night. The Old Town and San Diego are the prettiest and the priciest, with tourist pricing even at the corner shop. Manga is the sensible bet for a multi-month stay: residential, quiet, mostly local, decent buildings and noticeably lower rent, ten minutes by taxi from the center. Bocagrande is the tower option — AC, gym, beach at the door, big supermarkets; more anonymous and less postcard-Cartagena, but comfortable to actually live in. If you want cheaper or beachier, look at Crespo (next to the airport, with the plane noise that implies) or La Boquilla: farther from everything, much calmer.
ComunidadCommunity
Meeting people is easy; meeting people who'll still be here in two months, less so. Cartagena gets an enormous flow of short-stay visitors, so the foreign crowd turns over fast and most "nomads" you meet are on a long vacation. The real meeting points are the coworkings, the Getsemaní hostels, salsa and dance classes, and water sports up around La Boquilla; formal tech meetups are thin compared to Medellín or Bogotá. Daily life happens in Spanish and that's non-negotiable outside the tourist circuit — English only carries you inside the walls. The coastal accent is fast and drops final consonants, so even if you speak Spanish the first week will bruise you a bit.
The heat is the real filter, not the city: highs of 86-91 °F with heavy humidity all year, no winter, no break — plenty of people arrive in love and leave two months later melted. Budget air conditioning as a fixed cost and ask whether rent includes utilities, because the power bill bites here. August to November is the heaviest stretch of the rainy season: short but brutal downpours, with streets in the center and low-lying areas flooding and stalling traffic for a while (drainage is the city's historic weak spot). December–January and Easter week fill the city and short-term rents spike: if you're staying, negotiate a monthly rate and get it in writing. On prices, expect a "gringo rate" in the old town and on the beach — ask the price BEFORE in taxis, at any restaurant without a posted menu, and especially for the massages and ceviches offered to you on the sand. Safety: the center, Getsemaní, Manga and Bocagrande walk fine by day; late at night use ride apps, watch your phone, and be wary of drinks you didn't see poured and of dating-app meetups at a place the other person chose — scopolamine robbery is a documented problem here. The outlying southeastern neighborhoods are not for wandering. Paperwork: most passports enter visa-free for 90 days, extendable to 180 per calendar year, and Colombia does have a digital nomad visa (type V) for up to two years, with an income requirement pegged to the Colombian minimum wage (roughly US$1,000–1,200 a month depending on the year) — confirm the current figure with the foreign ministry before applying, since it resets every January.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
