Siem Reap

Aprox. 139,458 habitantesApprox. 139,458 people

Siem Reap is the base for visiting Angkor, the most staggering set of Khmer temples on earth, which has made it Cambodia's most travelled town. A few kilometres from the centre lie Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom with the faces of the Bayon, and Ta Prohm, the temple swallowed by roots. The town itself is small, flat and easy to explore: the Siem Reap River splits it, the Old Market (Psar Chas) and Pub Street hold the nightlife, and there's a growing scene of cafés, coworking spaces and nomads. To the south stretches the huge Tonlé Sap lake with its floating villages.

Mejor épocaBest time

The dry season, November to March, is ideal: less heat and easy temple access. April–May is brutally hot, then the monsoon rains arrive.

PresupuestoBudget

Cambodia is very cheap: you eat well for a few dollars and there's lodging for every budget. A nomad lives comfortably on $700–1,000 a month.

EntradaEntry

La entrada a Angkor se paga aparte con el Angkor Pass (1, 3 o 7 días).Cambodia grants visa on arrival or an online e-Visa for most nationalities. Angkor entry is separate, via the Angkor Pass (1, 3 or 7 days).

ConectividadConnectivity

Decent internet, wifi cafés and several coworking spaces; a modest but real nomad community, especially in the dry season.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Siem Reap? How much do you need per month in Siem Reap?

Siem Reap works if your priority is stretching money as far as it goes and working in peace: it's one of the cheapest bases in Southeast Asia, most things are priced directly in US dollars, and Cambodia is still one of the easier countries to stay in long-term if you land with the right visa. It doesn't work if you need a big nomad scene, serious healthcare, or bearable weather — this is a town that lives off Angkor tourism, the community is small and turns over fast, March to May is punishing heat, and any real medical emergency means flying to Bangkok. Great base for writing code or copy in silence; bad base if you want networking or big-city life.

Better than people expect. Home fiber is cheap (≈US$15–25/month) and typically delivers 30–100 Mbps — plenty for a full day of video calls; what varies is the building, so ask for a speed test before you sign. The problem isn't speed, it's power: Cambodia leans heavily on hydro and imported electricity, and in dry season (roughly March–June) outages happen and take your router with them. It's improved a lot since the long blackouts of a few years back, but it still happens. Most serious cafes and coworkings run a generator or inverter; your apartment probably doesn't — a small UPS and a mobile data backup are worth it. Mobile coverage (Cellcard, Smart, Metfone) is cheap and solid in town and around the temples, and thins out once you head into the countryside.

CoworkingCoworking

Mensualidad de coworking típica ≈US$60–100. Small but real scene. The best-known name among nomads is AngkorHUB, which has run as a coworking and coliving spot with an organized community — check it's still operating before you build plans around it, because businesses in Siem Reap open and close fast and several spaces didn't survive the tourism crash. Beyond that there are a couple of small spaces and, mainly, a strong cafe-working culture: the town is full of cafes with good wifi, A/C and outlets, and nobody pushes you out after three hours on a US$2.50 coffee. Typical coworking membership ≈US$60–100/month. If you're coming from Bangkok or Chiang Mai, adjust expectations — there aren't ten options here, there are two or three.

Wat Bo — the classic long-stay foreigner area: east of the river, leafy, quiet, full of furnished houses and apartments and good cafes, a 15-minute walk from the center. Wat Damnak, just south, is the even more residential, even quieter version — good if you work nights. Kandal Village (the pocket around Hup Guan Street, toward Sok San) is the prettiest: boutiques, specialty coffee, restaurants — pricier and more touristy, but it's where you'll actually spend your time. Svay Dangkum is the center around Pub Street and the Old Market: everything is a step away, but there's music until 2 a.m. and being that central isn't always cheaper — only if noise genuinely doesn't bother you. To pay less, the Taphul area to the west is more local and noticeably cheaper.

ComunidadCommunity

Small, very friendly, high turnover: a mix of NGO people, hospitality workers, English teachers and a handful of digital nomads. Meeting people is easy precisely because everyone already knows everyone — within two weeks the cafes recognize you. In Cambodia the way in is Facebook: the Siem Reap expat groups are where things actually happen (rentals, events, meetups, notices), far more than Meetup or Instagram. Day to day runs fine in English across the whole tourist zone; a bit of Khmer gets you the market, the local price and a lot of goodwill. Spanish-speaking community: essentially nonexistent — if you want to hear Spanish daily, this isn't your city.

Three things a friend would tell you before you book the flight. One, the visa: don't land on a tourist visa if you plan to stay. The tourist (type T, ≈US$30) extends only once for 30 days; the ordinary/business visa (type E, ≈US$35) is the one that extends for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, and the one-year extension runs ≈US$290–320 through an agent. Careful: Cambodia has been tightening the paperwork for that extension (employment or sponsorship documents, work permit), so check with a local agency for current rules before you count on your year — and if you land with the wrong visa, your six-month plan dies at immigration. Two, money is in dollars but with a catch: ATMs charge ≈US$4–5 per withdrawal, and torn, written-on or badly worn US bills get refused everywhere — bring clean notes. Small change comes back in riel (≈4,000 riel = US$1), since banks barely circulate small dollar bills anymore. Three, health and climate: local healthcare handles the basics; anything serious means flying to Bangkok (one hour), so insurance with medical evacuation isn't optional here. Dengue is real — take repellent seriously. March to May runs 35–38 °C with humidity and spikes near 40, and February to April the air gets worse from agricultural burning; May to October it rains hard and some streets flood. On top of that: the economy is almost entirely tourism-dependent and took a heavy hit after 2020; the new airport sits about 40–50 km from town (transfer ≈US$25–30, not the US$8 of the old days); and rentals usually run with no formal contract and 1–2 months' deposit held by the landlord — photograph everything on move-in, and don't prepay six months no matter how good the price sounds.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
